NCHSAA 4-A WOMEN’S GOLF           

PAGE’S HUNTER LEADS INDIVIDUAL STANDINGS; GREEN HOPE ON TOP IN TEAM

 

            PINEHURST – Ellis Hunter of Greensboro Page has a one-shot advantage after Monday's opening round of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 4-A women’s golf championships at Pinehurst number one.

           Hunter had a three-over par score of 73, with Catherine Ashworth of Fuquay-Varina and Jennifer Chang of Raleigh Athens Drive tied for second at four over par.  A trio of golfers, including Natalie Petersen of Holly Springs, Meghan Symonds of Green Hope and Sam Vodry of Mooresville, are at five-over.

            Par is set at 70 and the layout is 5,539 yards.

          Cary Green Hope leads the tightly bunched team standings by a pair of strokes over Charlotte Ardrey Kell. Raleigh Athens Drive and Charlotte Ardrey Kell have combined to win the last six state 4-A team titles, with Ardrey Kell winning in both 2012 and 2013.  Southern Pines Pinecrest is third, four shots back, and Greensboro Page fourth at 248, five shots off the pace.

            The best three scores of a team count toward the team totals, and a total of 10 teams and 78 golfers are competing in the event, the 12th year that the sport has been classified. It is the third time that three separate championships have been held and the 34th year for state championship competition in the sport.

            The final day of play is scheduled to get underway at eight o’clock on Tuesday morning.

1A/2A WOMEN'S GOLF

SALISBURY GOLFERS LEAD WAY IN 1-A/2-A WOMEN'S GOLF

            FOXFIRE VILLAGE— Grace Yatawara of Salisbury had an even par 72 on Monday to lead the way in the individual standings after the opening day of play in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association’s state 1-A/2-A women’s golf championships on the Red Fox Course at the Foxfire Resort and Golf Club.

            Yatawara, who had four birdies in her round, has a four-shot lead over teammate Isabella Rusher, who has won the tournament twice, in 2011 and 2012.

              Salisbury, seeking its fourth straight state team title, had a 19-shot advantage over second-place Avery County in the team standings.

             The course is set at par 72 and 5,703 yards for the championship.

            The best three scores of a team count toward the team totals, and a total of nine teams and 78 golfers are competing in the event, the 12th year that the sport has been classified. It is the third year that three separate championships have been held and the 34th year for state championship competition in the sport.

            The final day of play is scheduled to get underway at 9:00 on Tuesday morning.

3-A WOMEN’S GOLF

CHAPEL HILL GOLFER LEADS INDIVIDUAL STANDINGS AFTER FIRST DAY IN NCHSAA 3-A WOMEN'S GOLF

 

           SOUTHERN PINES— Gina Kim of Chapel Hill has a two-shot lead over the field after a brilliant opening day round of 69 on Monday in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association’s state 3-A women’s golf championships at the Longleaf Golf and Country Club.

           Kim’s three-under par 69 featured six birdies and give her a two-stroke advantage over Siranon Shomee of Lee Senior. Shomee is the defending champion, emerging from well back on the second day to win the individual crown in 2013.

            Riley Smyth of Raleigh Cardinal Gibbons is in third, four shots off the pace. The championship layout is a par 72 and 5,659 yards.

            Ledford has captured the last three state 3-A championships, but is down in the pack in the first day’s team standings.  Cardinal Gibbons has a 232 while Marvin Ridge is in second, 13 shots back, with Rockingham County third.
