First Day Action Completed In NCHSAA Wrestling Championships

DEFENDING CHAMPION CARY HOLDS TEAM LEAD IN NCHSAA STATE 4-A WRESTLING CHAMPIONSHIPS

WINSTON-SALEM – Four-time defending champion Cary holds a 13.5-point

lead in the team standings after Friday’s opening day of action in the North

Carolina High School Athletic Association wrestling tournament championships

at the Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum.

Cary, under veteran coach Jerry Winterton, tallied 53.5 points to 40 for second-place Davie Count . The Imps won the dual team championship earlier this month and have captured five of the last six NCHSAA tournament titles.

Five Cary wrestlers competed in Friday night’s quarterfinals and all five advanced to the semifinals. Benjamin Creed at 103 pounds, Cordale Risk at 130, Gabe Brotzman at 152, Matthew Colvard at 160, and 285-pounder Elohim Palma, ranked by many the top heavyweight in the country, all recorded victories.

Concord Jay Robinson is in third place with 38.5 points, followed by Hope Mills South View (38) and Fayetteville Pine Forest (31).

Action will resume on Saturday morning at 8:30, with the Parade of Champions and the title matches set for six o’clock Saturday night.

DEFENDING CHAMP WINSTON-SALEM PARKLAND HOLDS LEAD IN NCHSAA 3-A WRESTLING

WINSTON-SALEM — Winston-Salem Parkland rolled up a solid lead over the

field after Friday’s opening day of action in the North Carolina High School

Athletic Association state 3-A wrestling tournament championships at the

Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum.

Parkland, the two-time defending tournament champ which also won the NCHSAA dual

team title earlier this month, scored 63 points in the first day to 44 for second-place Mooresville. Trinity was just back in third with 42 points, followed by Hickory St.Stephens with 38 and Northwest Cabarrus with 37.

Parkland’s strength in the middle weights was evident as six Parkland grapplers advanced to Saturday’s semifinals in the weight classes from 125 to 160. Chris Rivas (125), Brian Thompson (135), Luis Ramos (140), Marcus Cain (145), Desean Grimes-Hines (152) and Marciano Ali (160) all were victorious.

TIGHT BATTLE SHAPING UP IN

NCHSAA STATE 1-A/2-A WRESTLING

WINSTON-SALEM – A very tight battle is brewing for the team championship after Friday’s action in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association 1-A/2-A state wrestling tournament championships at the Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum.

Defending champion Orange, which also won the 2-A dual team title earlier in the month, holds the lead over the field by a single point but seven teams are bunched within nine points of the top spot.

Orange has 35 points to 34 for Newport Croatan with Mayodan Dalton McMichael just back in third with 33.5 points. Also in contention are Mount Pleasant (28), Polk County (27), West Lincoln (26.5) and Robbinsville (26).

Although Croatan placed seven wrestlers in the quarterfinals while Orange had four, each had three winners advance to Saturday’s semifinals.

Action will resume on Saturday morning at 8:30, with the Parade of Champions and the title matches set for six o’clock Saturday night.
