JOHNSON MOVES STEP CLOSER TO FOURTH STRAIGHT CROWNIN NCHSAA STATE 3-A MEN’S TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS

BURLINGTON — Kyle Johnson of Charlotte Catholic moved a step closer to an unprecedented fourth consecutive singles championship on Friday in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 3-A men’s tennis championships at the Burlington Tennis Center.

Johnson won both of his matches in straight sets to move into the Saturday semifinals against Eric Greene of Western Alamance, whom he beat in last year’s state championship in a tough battle 7-6 (6), 7-5.

Johnson is one of seven players in NCHSAA history to win three state singles titles but no one has ever won four in a row.

Matt Daly of Raleigh Cardinal Gibbons will take on Eastern Wayne’s Chaz Fitzpatrick in the other singles semifinal.

All four doubles semifinalists marched through their Friday matches in straight sets, with the Cardinal Gibbons team of Killian Steer and Matt Galush dropping only two games in four sets. Steer teamed with Chris Geaslen a year ago to capture the 2-A doubles title.
