FIRST FLIGHT NIGHTHAWKS OUTFLY FORBUSH FALCONS TO TAKE NCHSAA STATE 2-A WOMEN’S SOCCER TITLE
RALEIGH—Kristina Argiroff’s goal proved to be the difference as Kill Devil Hills First Flight downed East Bend Forbush 2-1 on Saturday morning in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association’s women’s 2-A soccer championship at Paul Derr Stadium at N.C. State.
Argiroff, who was named the championship’s Most Valuable Player, scored her 28th goal of the season in the 26th minute off a pass form Samantha Hennessey to give the Nighthawks a 2-0 lead. That was after First Flight freshman Ede Sager opened the scoring in the 10th minute on a perfectly placed free kick from about 30 yards out that wound up in the upper left corner of the goal.
Forbush sliced the lead to 2-1 early in the second half as Kelly Wood lofted a long shot into the goal, but the Falcons could not tie it up despite having several other scoring opportunities. Forbush outshot First Flight 22-15 on the day.
First Flight, a school in its fourth year of operation, won its initial NCHSAA women’s soccer crown and finished with a 22-2 record, including a season-ending 11-match winning streak. Forbush had a 17-match win streak snapped and finished 22-4 overall.
The Raleigh Sports Consortium serves as the primary host city partner for the women’s soccer championship, along with the Raleigh Convention and Visitors Bureau. Wendy’s and the Carolinas Ford Dealers are the presenting sponsors for the NCHSAA sports program.
