FORMER STATE RUNNERS-UP IN 3-A SINGLES SEMIFINALS

BURLINGTON—  Last year’s 3-A state singles runner-up Alix Theodossiou of Asheville moved into the semifinals with a pair of wins on Friday in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 3-A women’s tennis tournament at the Burlington Tennis Center.

Theodossiou will face Masey DeMoss of Madison Dalton McMichael on Saturday morning in one semifinal, with DeMoss dropping only two games in her four sets of play on the opening day.  DeMoss finished second in the state tournament in 2010 to Asheville’s MacKenzie LaSure.

Ashton Walker of Pikeville Charles B. Aycock will tangle with diminutive freshman Sarah Jiang of Concord Cox Mill in the other semifinal.

The doubles field of 16 teams featured three pairs of sisters, and one of them won their way into the semifinals to join two teams from Charlotte Catholic.

Randi Price and Kaley Price of Nash Central will play Grace Deering and Rachel Tomchin of Charlotte Catholic, while the Catholic pair of Caroline Smith and Christine Kessel will take on Emma Yates and Heidi Swope of Weddington.

Yates and Swope dropped the first set in the quarterfinals to the Cardinal Gbbons team of Natalie Freeman and Caroline Smith but battled back to win by 5-7, 6-4, 6-1.

Action is scheduled to start on Saturday morning at nine o’clock.
