GOLDSBORO, NC – Norman Clark, the former Athletic Director and Health and Physical Education Coordinator for Wayne County Schools, and a long-time NCHSAA football coach, passed away earlier this week at the age of 97.
Coach Clark started his coaching career in the NCHSAA with Morehead City High School, eventually migrating to West Carteret for a year and then Southern Wayne. Before jumping into education administration as the system Athletic Director for Wayne County, Clark racked up a record of 136 wins against just 35 losses and 8 ties. He led teams to 13 conference titles and a pair of Regional Championships when play culminated at the regional level in the 1960’s.
Clark served as the conference president of both the Seashore Conference and Coastal Plains Conference during his career. He coached in the East-West All-Star Game in 1969 and was an active community member with his church, the Jaycees and various other civic organizations. He was also an avid fisherman.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Vivian, his son Craig Wayne Clark, and two daughters Jan Lane Clark Rose and Kelly Clark Kokiko as well as numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. A celebration of life will be held in Morehead City at a later date.
