GUNTER SEEKS THIRD STRAIGHT INDIVIDUAL CROWN, TIED FOR FIRST
AFTER FIRST DAY OF PLAY IN NCHSAA 1A/2A/3A WOMEN’S GOLF
FOXFIRE VILLAGE—Defending individual champion Courtney Gunter of Indian Trail Porter Ridge is in a position to try to make it three state titles in a row after Monday’s opening day of play in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association’s state 1A/2A/3A women’s golf championships at the Foxfire Resort and Golf Club.
Gunter, a senior who has won the last two individual championships in this classification, is tied with Lake Norman senior Haley Hammond after both posted four-over par 76 scores on the West Course at Foxfire. West Henderson sophomore Kayla Scuipider is by herself in third place, three shots off the pace.
Juniors Laura Chang of Jamestown Ragsdale and Lori Beth Adams of Western Alamance are four shots back.
Defending team champion Cameron Union Pines made a strong team showing with an excellent score of 254 to hold first place by 16 shots over Jamestown Ragsdale. Charlotte Catholic is in third, 19 shots back, and Lake Norman and Southern Lee are tied for fourth just a shot behind Catholic.
The best three scores of a team count toward the team totals, and a total of 12 teams and 78 golfers are competing in the event, the sixth year that a separate 1A/2A/3A championship has been held.
Play is scheduled to get underway at 9:00 on Tuesday morning. Wendy’s is the presenting sponsor of the NCHSAA sports program.
