Hoggard’s Burns Takes NCHSAA 4-A Singles Crown; Broughton Wins Doubles

RALEIGH—Sophomore Kaitlin Burns of Wilmington Hoggard captured two matches on Saturday to win the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 4-A women’s tennis singles championship at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center on the North Carolina State University campus.

Burns rolled to the state championship with an easy 6-1, 6-0 triumph over Kinsey Pate of Matthews David Butler after eliminating Greensboro Page’s Caroline Newman 6-3 and 7-5 in a morning semifinal.

The Raleigh Broughton doubles team of Marianne Simpson and Martha Williams took a straight-set victory over Taylor Gibson and Callie Kucharski of Green Hope in the title match. Simpson and Williams won by 6-3, 6-1, after winning by an identical score in the semifinals over the East Chapel Hill team of Jennifer Huang and Toni Wei.

It was the first state doubles title by a Broughton team since 2003, when the Caps won three consecutive crowns from 2001 through ‘03.

The event had been scheduled for Friday and Saturday at the Millbrook Exchange Park, but rain and wet courts forced both days to be played indoors. Wendy’s and the Carolinas Ford Dealers are the presenting sponsors of the NCHSAA sports program.
