Janna Fonseca (MED, LAT, ATC) joined the North Carolina High School Athletic Association in September 2022 as the Director of Health, Safety and Wellness. In this role, she provides guidance in sports medicine matters to member schools by monitoring compliance in areas of sports-related concussion, emergency action planning, and educational requirements for athletic trainers and first responders.
Fonseca joined the NCHSAA after serving two stints as an administrative manager with Duke University: most recently with the Duke University School of Nursing, and prior to that, with Duke Sports Medicine.
From 2005-2017, Janna served as a clinical athletic trainer, supervisor of clinical operations, and coordinator of community outreach for Carolina Family Practice & Sports Medicine in Wake County. In 2008 she helped to launch the Carolina Sports Concussion Clinic, which as a community-based service, provides evidence-based care to nearly 1,000 sports-related concussions per year. Her community outreach efforts including securing medical coverage for NCHSAA Championship events, USA Baseball events, and ACC Baseball Championship events held in the triangle area. She also served as a liaison to the Carolina Hurricanes, organizing and executing pre-participation physical evaluations in advance of the NHL season.
Fonseca obtained her Bachelor’s Degree in Sports Medicine and Athletic Training from Southwest Missouri State in 2002 and her Master’s Degree in Educational Administration from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, where she also served as a graduate assistant athletic trainer for the women’s basketball team. She has held her certification as an athletic trainer by the NATA BOC since August 2002 and has been licensed as an athletic trainer in the state of North Carolina since 2005. She currently serves on the North Carolina Board of Athletic Trainer Examiners and is Chair of the Ethics Committee. She is also in her fifth year as an athletic trainer spotter for the Carolina Panthers.
Janna resides in Durham with her husband Jose and her two children, Pete and Lexi.
