RALEIGH LEESVILLE ROAD BLANKS ARDREY KELL 3-0 IN NCHSAA WOMEN’S 4-A SOCCER CHAMPIIONSHIP
RALEIGH – Raleigh Leesville Road scored two goals in the game’s first 11 minutes and rolled to a 3-0 victory over Charlotte Ardrey Kell on Friday night in the 23rd annual North Carolina High School Athletic Association’s women’s 4-A soccer championship at Paul Derr Stadium at N.C. State.
Junior forward Nitang Jones of Leesville Road, with a goal and an assist, was named the Most Valuable Player of the championship as the Pride won its ninth straight match, finishing 24-2 in winning its first NCHSAA women’s soccer title.
Sophomore Faren Frizelle opened the scoring in the seventh minute for the winners, the first goal scored against Ardrey Kell in six playoff matches this spring. Then just four minutes later freshman Stephanie Bronson found the back of the net on an cross from the corner from Jones to make it 2-0.
Jones tallied in the 65th minute to close out the scoring.
The Pride outshot Ardrey Kell just 10-9, but the Knights managed only a single shot on goal in the final 40 minutes. Leesville dominated the time of possession and its defense, which allowed only six goals all season long, was solid.
Ardrey Kell, a school in only its second year of existence, finished the season 19-3-3.
The Raleigh Sports Consortium serves as the primary host city partner for the women’s soccer championship, along with the Raleigh Convention and Visitors Bureau. Wendy’s and the Carolinas Ford Dealers are the presenting sponsors for the NCHSAA sports program.
