Margaretta Chantay Strickland of Morehead High School has passed away

Margaretta Chantay Strickland56, of Eden, NC, passed Friday, July 5, 2024.

Public viewing will be held Thursday, July 11, 2024, from 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Perry Spencer Funeral Home, 511 Henry St. Eden, NC. The funeral service will be held in the auditorium of Morehead High School,134 N. Pierce St., Eden, NC. Visitation will be held from 12 noon to 1:00 p.m., with the service beginning at 1:00 p.m. 

Chantay Strickland was a Physical Education teacher who taught 9th-grade Health and P.E. and Team Sports for upperclassmen at Morehead High School in Eden. Chantay also coached varsity women’s basketball, varsity volleyball, women’s track and field, and J.V. softball. She received her B.S. degree in Education with a certification in Physical Education from the University of N.C. at Pembroke. In addition to teaching, she enjoyed volunteering to support any of the sports programs and the athletes. She had been the women’s basketball Conference Coach of the Year in 2007.

In addition to performing the National Anthem for the Charlotte Hornets, Greensboro Grasshoppers, and Burlington Sock Puppets, she lent her talents to numerous NCHSAA football and basketball state championships. “We will miss her presence and vocal talents at our championship events,” says Que Tucker, Commissioner.

Chantay believed that being active allowed individuals to live happier lives and enjoyed teaching the kids about life in general. She had lived in Eden and enjoyed spending time with her family. She loved going to her church and being part of the Praise team.
