SOUTH STANLY RALLIES TO BEAT TOPSAIL 6-2
ZEBULON — Jared Aman had a big two-run double in a five-run sixth inning as South Stanly downed Hampstead Topsail 6-1 in the opening game of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 1-A baseball championship series at Five County Stadium on Friday.
Senior righthander Wes Hatley went the distance on the mound for the winners, allowing just three hits and fanning eight, while Dan Retinger took the loss.
Matt Lisk led the winners at the plate with three hits in four trips while Brett Fraley had two singles in four at bats in the Rowdy Rebel Bulls’ 11-hit attack.
South scored the opening run of the game in the top of the fourth after Hatley doubled, went to third on a single by Colten Burris, and then scored on a fielder’s choice. But Topsail came back to grab a 2-1 advantage in its half of the frame when Kyle Horton’s triple plated Jake Stone, who had singled, and then Horton scored on a fielder’s choice.
South Stanly then took command in the sixth by virtue of Aman’s double and a costly outfield error that led to a couple of more runs.
The Rowdy Rebel Bulls improved to 24-5 on the year, winning their seventh straight game in the playoffs. Topsail, in its second straight state championship series, slipped to 21-11.
Game two in the best-of-three series is set for Saturday morning at eleven o’clock.
