Lake Norman sophomore Kieran Rinaldi scored twice in overtime to lift Lake Norman past Cardinal Gibbons 17-15 in an extra frame in the sixth annual NCHSAA Women’s Lacrosse Championship. Rinaldi also scored with 18 seconds remaining to give the Wildcats a 14-13 lead before Gibbons countered with an incredible goal by Erica Skowron just before the final horn to send the game to overtime. Despite the loss, Cardinal Gibbons’ Jordan Lappin was chosen as the Most Valuable Player in the championship, finishing with six goals and two assists on the day, bringing her season goal total to 90 on the year. It was Lake Norman’s first women’s lacrosse title in the six year history of the sport.
The 4A men’s championship went to Apex as they built an early lead and held off a furious comeback by Charlotte Catholic to win 7-6. The Apex Cougar victory avenged an 11-8 win by Catholic in the finals the season before. Nick Greco of Apex was named the game’s Most Valuable Player scoring two goals and dishing out two assists. Charlotte Catholic had possession with 1:36 to play trailing 7-6 but failed to score as Apex secured possession in the final seconds to seal the victory. Apex won despite a 39-14 advantage for Catholic in shots, with an 18-10 edge in shots on goal to Charlotte Catholic.
In the 1A/2A/3A men’s championship Cardinal Gibbons defeated Marvin Ridge for the second year in a row in the final, this time by a 13-12 count in overtime. The Crusaders were lifted to the victory in sudden death overtime by a goal from Nick Forbes with 59 seconds remaining in the overtime period. Forbes finished the day as the game’s Most Valuable Player with four goals and had seven assists helping his Crusaders score the final four goals of the game to tie it with 23 seconds remaining in regulation and eventually win it in sudden death overtime.
