NCHSAA 2-A. 4-A Track and Field Championships Set For Irwin Belk Track at North Carolina A&T
GREENSBORO — Top athletes from across the state of North Carolina will compete in a busy weekend of track as the North Carolina High School Athletic Association has its second consecutive weekend of state track and field championships.
The weekend of competition will feature 2-A championships for both men and women on Friday, and then on Saturday the 4-A championships will be held, all at the Irwin Belk Track on the campus of North Carolina A&T State University.
The 1-A and 3-A meets were held last weekend.
Action in the field events will begin at 11 am and running events will start at noon on Friday, while Saturday’s schedule opens with field events at 10 am and running events at 11 am. It will be the 89th annual men’s championships and the 38th annual renewal of the women’s event.
In the 4-A men’s competition, New Bern will be seeking its fourth consecutive state team title and won its regional event last weekend. Other regional champs included Southeast Raleigh, Winston-Salem Mount Tabor and East Burke.
Fayetteville E.E. Smith athlete Ben Major won all four events he participated in during last weekend’s regional and East Burke junior Tanner Anderson soared to an amazing height of seven feet, two and one-half inches in the West Regional.
Southeast Raleigh, Durham Jordan, Mount Tabor and Charlotte Myers Park won the 4-A women’s regional competitions. Matthews David Butler is the defending 4-A women’s champ.
Among 2-A men’s programs, Shelby, East Lincoln, Cardinal Gibbons and North Brunswick captured regional titles so Shelby will certainly be a contender to defend its state championship. West Henderson won its sixth consecutive West Regional title and joins Salisbury, Burilngton Cummings and Swansboro as regional titlists. Cummings, a perennial track power, is the defending 2-A women’s champ.
The Greensboro Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Greensboro Sports Commission are serving as the host city sponsors for the event.
