Murphy’s David Gentry captures historic win number 413 at Swain County

BRYSON CITY, NC – There is a new leader in all-time coaching wins in North Carolina High School Athletic Association football, David Gentry from Murphy. His Bulldogs stunned Swain County 15-14 with a touchdown and two-point conversion in the closing minutes of a tight game on the road on October 18, 2019, to hand the head coach his 413th career victory.

The victory was the culmination of 46 years of high school football head coaching experience at Chatham, his alma mater, Edneyville, and now Murphy where he has been at the helm for 36 years. Gentry has eight State Championship victories, all with Murphy. Gentry holds a 413-194-3 record as a head coach and is now listed at number twenty all-time in the nation for 11-player coaching wins according to the NFHS Record Book, just behind Iowa’s Curt Bladt who has 415 career victories. Gentry is 353-116-1 at Murphy.

The Bulldogs’ victory on Friday night pushed Gentry past Jack Holley, who passed away in 2013 after finishing his career at Wallace-Rose Hill after 44 years coaching football. Holley also coached at Tabor City, Hallsboro, West Columbus, South Columbus, and Harrells Christian Academy.
