ROSEWOOD’S CUDDINGTON RETURNS TO FINALS;

ELKIN TEAM TO FACE BISHOP MCGUINNESS FOR DOUBLES CROWN

                  CARY— Dylan Cuddington of Rosewood, the 2013 runner-up, has once again advanced to the singles finals after winning two matches on Thursday in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 1-A men’s tennis championships at the Cary Tennis Center.

                  Cuddington will face Elkin’s Ryan Schell for the championship on Friday morning at nine o’clock. Schell lost only four games in four sets on Thursday in his two victories.

                  Cuddington lost in last year’s finals to Jacob Fuqua of Hendersonville, but Hendersonville has moved up to 2-A due to realignment.

                  Elkin also qualified a doubles team into the finals, as Chad Vestal and David Bullin won both of their matches. The Elkin pair had a tough three-set match in the quarterfinals, downing Harrison Stone and Christian Quic of Durham Voyager Academy 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.

                  Vestal and Bullin will take on Sam McLaughry and Zack Jones of Kernersville Bishop McGuinness in the doubles championship, which will also start at 9 am.

2-A NCHSAA MEN’S TENNIS—FIRST DAY

CARRBORO, HENDERSONVILLE SINGLES PLAYERS IN SEMIFINALS

                  CARY— A couple of singles players familiar with championship matches earned their way into the semifinals with a pair of wins Thursday in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 2-A men’s tennis championships at the Cary Tennis Center.

                  Brian Freiburghouse of Carrboro, last year’s 2-A singles runner-up, and Hendersonville’s Jacob Fuqua each won their first two matches.  Fuqua won the 1-A championship a year ago but Hendersonville moved up to 2-A due to realignment.

                  Freiburghouse, who outlasted Grant Buckner of Burnsville Mountain Heritage in a tough three-set match in the quarterfinals by 6-2, 3-6, 6-2, will face Salisbury’s Michael Ogden while Fuqua will take on Brevard’s Joseph Schrader.

                 A Newton-Conover team had won the 2-A doubles championship for the last four years, but that won’t happen this year.  Max Fritsch and Jake Zinn of Carrboro ousted the Red Devil duo of Tyler Barrymore and Gordon Wepner in the quarterfinals, 6-2, 7-5. Barrymore had teamed with John Tate to win the doubles title in 2013.

                 The Carrboro pair will take on Clint Comadoll and Spencer Storey of Salisbury in one semifinal, while Evan Kramer and Will Hardy of North Lenoir tangle with Cre Still and Chris Wilson of Brevard in the other.

                  Semifinals are scheduled to start at 9 am Friday morning, with the finals following later in the day.
