NCHSAA Dual Team Wrestling Championship Roundup

Davie County outlasted Cary by a 41-23 count on Saturday to win the North Carolina High School Athletic Association’s 17th annual state 4-A dual team wrestling championship in Mocksville.

The host War Eagles dealt Cary its first loss in 40 matches while improving their own record to 42-1.

Timmy Allen’s victory by a pin at the 189-pound weight class sealed the victory for Davie, which was in the finals for the seventh time and fourth time in the past eight years. It was the Eagles’ second NCHSAA dual-team wrestling crown.

Cary, which was the defending champion, made its 11th appearance in the championship match in the 17-year history of the tournament and sixth consecutive visit to the finals.

In Hickory, Eden Morehead defeated Hickory St. Stephens 41-22 for the NCHSAA 3-A title. Morehead ran its record to 40-3 while St. Stephens dropped to 37-7.

Bobby Shonar of Morehead, at 125 pounds, was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler in the3-A final.

The 2-A championship in Catawba saw the home-standing Bandys Trojans down Newport Croatan for the crown in a rematch of last year’s 2-A title match.

Bandys won its second consecutive wrestling state title and won for the 39th time in 41 dual matches this year while Croatan dropped to 23-2.

Markley Morrison of the Trojans moved up from his customary class of 189 to heavyweight and won his match which helped spark Bandys to the victory.

In the 1-A title match in Sparta, host Alleghany defeated Hampstead Topsail 42-27. Alleghany won its fourth NCHSAA dual-team title in five trips to the championship and improved its record to 25-5. Topsail is 37-8 overall.
