20th ANNUAL NCHSAA DUAL TEAM WRESTLING CHAMPIONSHIPS SCHEDULED
Championships in four classifications will be decided on Saturday in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association’s 20th annual dual team wrestling championships.
The championships are held on high school campuses and this year the Eastern champions are the hosts. All of the teams advancing to the Saturday championship matches in 2-A, 3-A and 4-A either earned a pair of victories on Thursday night or are wrestling tonight to gain a shot at the state title. Four teams will meet on Saturday in the 1-A classification to wrestle to the crown.
Inclement weather forced postponement of some matches this week, so in some cases the pairings are not yet set for Saturday’s finals.
Cary, under veteran head coach Jerry Winterton, has won seven previous NCHSAA championships and the Imps are in the finals for the 14th time. The Imps are making their ninth consecutive appearance in the championships and will be gunning for their third consecutive dual-team title.
Cary (35-0) will await the winner of matches tonight among Matthews David Butler (19-3), Northwest Guilford (22-3), Concord Jay Robinson (24-2) and last year’s state runner-up Davie County (34-0).
Weigh-ins are scheduled for 5 p.m. Saturday with Cary hosting the Western winner at 6 p.m.
The 3-A final is slated for Dudley High School in Greensboro, as the Panthers (20-5) await the Western qualifier out of matches tonight. Hickory St. Stephens (26-1) will take on Mooresville (30-1) while Trinity (25-3) grapples with two-time defending state champion Winston-Salem Parkland (35-0).
The 2-A championship is a rematch of last year’s final as the Red Devils of Newton-Conover (36-5) travel to Hillsborough to take on Orange (26-3). The championship will start at 6 p.m. after the 5 p.m. weigh-ins.
Newton-Conover is in the finals for the third straight year and last year lost to Orange 29-25 in the championship. Orange has won two dual team titles in the previous four years, including the 2005 3-A crown and then last year as a 2-A school.
Four teams will converge at Thomasville on Saturday to wrestle for the state title, with weigh-ins at 2 p.m. followed by the regional matches at 3 p.m. The championship will follow.
Hampstead Topsail (22-11) will wrestle Thomasville (15-10) while Polk County (12-3) takes on West Wilkes (23-2). Topsail has been the runner-up to Alleghany in each of the last three years of 1-A competition.
