NCHSAA Golf Championships Open At Four Sites

TOPSAIL, EAST SURRY OPEN UP SIZABLE LEAD IN NCHSAA 1-A MEN’S GOLF

BUIES CREEK– Hampstead Topsail and East Surry have opened up a sizable margin over the field after Monday’s first day of the 11th annual North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 1-A men’s golf championships at the Keith Hills Country Club.

The championship is being contested on the Keith Hills II course, a par-72, 6500-yard layout for the NCHSAA event.

Topsail, fifth in last year’s 1-A tournament, shot an even 300 and placed five igolfers among the top ten individuals. Topsail holds a five-shot lead over defending team champion East Surry, and Polk County is in third place but is 26 shots off the pace.

The best four of six individual scores count toward the team total.

Topsail’s Joe Ondish has the individual lead after firing a brilliant three-under 69, two shots ahead of defending 1-A individual champ John Welden of East Surry. Welden’s teammate Ethan Grimmer is in third at 72 and Andrew Bateman of Andrews shot a 73.

Prior to 1986, all NCHSAA schools competed for a single title in an open tournament. Play went to three classifications in 1986 and then to four classes beginning with the 1998 tournaments.

A total of 81 golfers began play in the two-day tournament. Action will resume at eight o’clock on Tuesday morning.

Wendy’s and the Carolinas Ford Dealers are the presenting sponsors of the NCHSAA sports program.

TIGHT RACES LOOMING IN NCHSAA 3-A GOLF

FOX FIRE VILLAGE— Just four shots separate the top four teams in the standings after Monday’s first day of play in the 23rd annual North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 3-A men’s golf championships at the Fox Fire Resort and Country Club.

The championship is being held on the East Course at the Fox Fire Resort and Country Club, a par-72, 6500-yard layout for the NCHSAA event.

Gastonia Forestview leads the field with a 305 after a day of play under very difficult, windy conditions. Wilson Fike is two shots back at 307, with Hickory at 308 and Burlington Williams at 309.

The best four of six individual scores count toward the team total.

Hickory and Forestview deadlocked for the crown last year at 305 and Hickory won on the basis of the fifth player’s scores over the two-day competition.

Senior Michael Muscatell of Charlotte Catholic, the 2006 champion, leads the individual standings with a one-under par 71, one shot ahead of freshman Robert Register of Burlington Williams. Billy Barham of Southeast Guilford is by himself in third at 73.

Defending individual champion Robert Hoadley of Cameron Union Pines, who was seventh in the 2006 state 3-A championship, is tied for 13th at 77, six shots back.

Prior to 1986, all NCHSAA schools competed for a single title in an open tournament. Play went to three classifications in 1986 and then to four classes beginning with the 1998 tournaments.

A total of 84 golfers began play in the two-day tournament. Action will resume at eight o’clock on Tuesday morning.

DEFENDING CHAMP GREEN HOPE HOLDS NCHSAA 4-A GOLF LEAD

PINEHURST— Defending team champion Morrisville Green Hope, seeking its third consecutive state title, has an eight-shot advantage over the field after Monday’s opening day of the 72nd annual North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 4-A men’s golf championships at Pinehurst number six.

The championship is being contested on a par-71 layout set at 6,500 yards or the NCHSAA event.

Green Hope carded a 287, eight shots ahead of Charlotte Providence, with Southern Pines Pinecrest in third at 296. Alexander Central is fourth at 305.

The best four of six individual scores count toward the team total.

Green Hope’s Michael Marshburn leads the individual standings after shooting a one-under-par 70 under the difficult, blustery conditions, but that is good for just a single stroke advantage over five golfers, including Green Hope teammate Michael Cromie. There are 17 golfers within five shots of the lead entering the final day of action.
