Throughout the course of the 2008-2009 academic year, we will seek to recognize some of the great names of the past to highlight the heritage of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association in honor of the Association’s 95th anniversary. In this edition we are pleased to recognize Thomas Henry “Toby” Webb, Jr.
Toby Webb helped build Albemarle into a well-known football power and served the schools there in a number of different capacities.
During his tenure as head football coach and athletic director, Webb’s teams posted an amazing 103-18-6 record, winning five conference championships and a couple of Western North Carolina High School Activities Association (WNCHSAA) crowns. He was a head coach in both the East-West and Shrine Bowl all-star football games.
Webb was a principal in Albemarle for some 12 years and then served for 13 years as superintendent of the Albemarle City Schools. A 1943 graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, he has been extensively involved in community and church activities in Stanly County.
He was inducted into the North Carolina High School Athletic Association Hall of Fame in 1992.
