LAST YEAR

Competition had to be crammed into two days instead of the scheduled three because of winter weather in the state.

The 4A dual team champion for the year, Jack Britt, won its first state 4A wrestling tournament title ever, as the Buccaneers jumped ahead on the first day of competition and held off Northwest Guilford 152.5-124.5. Britt had six wrestlers in the semifinals and then four in the championship finals in weight classes 145 or below. Two Buccaneers, Bradley Wanovich (113) and Richard Tolston (126) earned individual titles.

The 3A team title of the event was very tightly contested as 76 different schools were represented in the tournament. Morehead earned the title for the second year in a row, tallying 98.5 points to out pace runner-up Swansboro who finished with 75.

Newton-Conover led the 2A standings after day one of the competition, but Hunter Huss stormed from behind on day two of competition as the Huskies picked up the 2A crown with a 115-95.5 margin over Newton-Conover. Charles McCombs won the 126 division for the Huskies.

Mitchell claimed the 1A crown for the first time since 1990 as the Mountaineers cruised by second place Mount Airy 121-90. Three Mountaineers claimed individual titles as Kyler Hoilman won the 120-pound class, Levi Richardson took 126 and Dalton Beaver won 145.
