RALEIGH – Meagan Tatum of Person led the Rockets to a four-game decision over Charlotte Myers Park in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 4-A volleyball championships on Saturday at Reynolds Coliseum on the N.C. State campus.
Person won the opening game 25-17, lost the second 25-22, and then recorded 25-19 and 25-17 victories to clinch the title.
Tatum, a 6-2 senior outside hitter who recorded 14 kills and also had three service aces, was named the Most Valuable Player of the championship. Outside hitter Bria James knocked home 23 kills to pace West Iredell.
Person won its second consecutive state 4-A crown and finished the season with a 24-1 mark, while Myers Park, in its first appearance ever in the volleyball finals, closed the year at 25-3.
Amanda Robertson added 15 kills for the winners while Christine Perzinski had nine kills and Olivia Humprhies eight for Myers Park.
Greenville D.H. Conley won a dramatic five-game affair over West Iredell for the 3-A title, winning the fifth and decisive game 15-7.
Conley dropped the opener 25-20, won the second game 25-15, and then fell behind two games to one by losing 25-21 and then took the fourth by 25-22.
Senior Stephanie Lombardo of Conley was the MVP of the 3-A title match with 15 kills and five digs.
Conley finished with a 24-4 mark while West Iredell wound up 22-6.
Senior Bailey Hunter earned her third consecutive championship Most Valuable Player award as she led Hendersonville to its third straight NCHSAA 1-A championship.
Hendersonville rolled past Louisburg in three consecutive games by scores of 25-21, 25-17 and 25-16, to earn its ninth state crown in 11 visits to the final. Louisburg was playing in its eighth state championship but first since 1997.
Hunter, who is headed to Georgia Tech, had a great all-around game with 20 mills, three blocks and 13 digs in leading the Lady Bearcats to their 27th victory in 30 starts. Britney Hicks paced Louisburg, 24-2 overall, with 12 kills.
The final championship of the day saw Raleigh Cardinal Gibbons defeat Boonville Starmount for the 2-A title in three straight, 25-16, 25-13 and 25-20.
Gibbons earned its third consecutive NCHSAA crown and ran its record to 31-2 overall, while Starmount fell to 31-4.
Katie Kabbes of Gibbons, who has signed to play at Penn State, was the Most Valuable Player of the championship for the second consecutive year. She had 21 kills and 10 digs to lead the winners.
Taylor Doss recorded six kills for Starmount and Jana Matthews had 15 digs.
