2-A CLASSIFICATION STARTS COMPETITION ONOPENING DAY OF NCHSAA WRESTLING CHAMPIONSHIPS AT GREENSBORO COLISEUM
GREENSBORO — The North Carolina High School Athletic Association state wrestling championships at the Greensboro Coliseum got underway on Thursday evening with two rounds of competition in the 2-A classification.
The 2-A wrestlers were the only ones to compete on the opening day, finishing both the first round and the first round of consolations.
Newport Croatan, the defending 2-A tournament champion and two-time dual team champ, is the team leader in the standings after two rounds with 26 points as seven wrestlers advanced in the championship bracket. Newton-Conover is second at 24, followed by Wheatmore (22), Trinity (21.5) and Monroe Piedmont and Hampstead Topsail (19 each). A total of 75 different 2-A schools qualified at least one wrestler to the state championships.
The other three classifications will begin competition Friday morning starting at 8:30 am and the 2-A will continue later in the day.
