NCHSAA Track and Field Championships Set For Irwin Belk Track at North Carolina A&T
GREENSBORO — Top athletes from across the state of North Carolina will compete in a busy weekend of track as the North Carolina High School Athletic Association begins its state track and field championships.
The weekend of competition features 1-A championships for both men and women on Friday, and then on Saturday the 2-A championships will be held, all at the Irwin Belk Track on the campus of North Carolina A&T State University.
The 3-A and 4-A meets will be held next weekend.
Action in the field events will begin at 10 am and running events will start at 11 am. It will be the 90th annual men’s championships and the 39th annual renewal of the women’s event.
Winston-Salem Prep is the two-time defending state champion in 1-A women’s track while Burlington Cummings is seeking its fifth consecutive 2-A women’s title.
The Bearcats of Hendersonville seek their third consecutive men’s 1-A state team title in track and field while Waxhaw Marvin Ridge captured its first championship in 3-A men’s track and field a year ago, breaking a two-year string by Mooresville.
In regional action last week, among the team winners in the 1-A men were Pamlico, winning its fifth regional in a row, while North Rowan captured both men’s and women’s in their regional.
In 2-A, the women’s regional champions form last weekend included Polk County, Salisbury, Burlington Cummings and Kinston, while on the men’s side Polk and East Lincoln shared a regional crown, along with Salisbury, Cummings and Wilson Beddingfield winning in other regions.
Admission to the championship each day is six dollars.
The Greensboro Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Greensboro Sports Commission are serving as the host city sponsors for the event.
