NCHSAA Women’s Dual Team Tennis Title Matches Set For Saturday

BURLINGTON – The 17th annual North Carolina High School Athletic Association state championships in women’s dual team tennis will be contested on Saturday with four titles up for grabs.

The 1-A and 2-A finals will start at nine o’clock Saturday morning with the 3-A and 4-A matches starting at noon. All of the qualifiers won regional matches on Thursday to advance to the state finals, and there are four unbeaten teams among the eight finalists.

The 4-A match will feature a repeat of the 2005 final as Raleigh Broughton (17-0) takes on defending champion Greensboro Page (19-0). Page and Broughton are meeting for the fifth consecutive time in the state championship match, with Page winning the last two meetings. Page snapped a six-year reign by the Capitals as the state champs back in 2004 and is currently riding a 58-game dual-team winning streak.

Broughton will make its 12th straight appearance in the championships and is looking for its ninth state crown.

The 3-A match is a battle of unbeatens as Cameron Union Pines (18-0) takes on Hickory (17-0). Hickory is in the championship for the sixth time but earned its only state crown back in 1993, while Union Pines, a strong tennis program, is in the finals for the first time.

In 2-A, Raleigh Cardinal Gibbons (14-4) snapped Greene Central’s string of the Eastern regional championships at eight to advance to the finals against Salisbury (21-1). Salisbury is seeking its fourth women’s dual team state title overall and lost to Greene Central in last year’s championship.

Hampstead Topsail (13-3) is back in the 1-A championship for the third year in a row, taking on undefeated Siler City Jordan-Matthews (20-0). Topsail is still looking for its first women’s dual team title in the sport, while Jordan-Matthews has two previous state crowns, most recently in 2003, and is in the finals for the sixth time.

Wendy’s and the Carolina Ford Dealers are the presenting sponsors of the NCHSAA sports program.
