CHAPEL HILL—Top golfers from across the state will compete next week in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association’s 25th women’s state golf championships.
For the third year in a row, the NCHSAA will offer classified championships because the number of schools competing in the sport has grown. The two-day event will be held on Monday and Tuesday at two different sites.
The 4-A championship will be held at Fox Fire Resort and Country Club in Fox Fire Village, with the East Course set at 5,634 yards. The 1-A, 2-A and 3-A golfers will compete together at The Country Club at Whispering Pines, with the West Course there measuring at 5,534 yards for the championship.
Players qualified to the state champions from regionals across the state in each of the two classifications for championships.
Last year Raleigh Leesville Road took the state 4-A team title by 16 strokes over Winston-Salem R.J. Reynolds, with Greensboro Page in third. Leesville’s Jennifer O’Connor was the individual champion.
East Henderson has won both 1A/2A/3A team championships, besting runner-up Clayton by 19 shots a year ago, and Blair Lamb of East Henderson has earned both of the individual titles. In 2003 she ran away from the field, winning by an incredible 16 shots. Lamb won the all-classifications individual title in 2002.
The best two scores for a team, which may have up to four individuals, are counted each day toward the team total.
A total of 80 golfers will compete next week in the 1-A/2-A/3-A event while the 4-A field includes 72 golfers. The first groups in both championships will tee off at eight o’clock Monday morning.
The NCHSAA women’s golf championships are presented by Wendy’s and the Carolina Ford Dealers.
