CHAPEL HILL— Abigail Wilson from West Rowan High School and Hayden Carpenter from Union Academy have been named recipients of the NCHSAA Performance of the Week award. Each week two athletes in North Carolina High School Athletic Association competition are selected for this award from nominations received from coaches, media, and school administrators.
Wilson, a senior on the Falcons’ women’s basketball team, surpassed 2,000 career points on Tuesday with a 31 point 14 rebound performance against Statesville. Later in the week, the senior recorded 33 points and 15 rebounds in an overtime win against East Rowan. Wilson is the school’s all-time leading scorer and has led West Rowan to a 17-2 record this season.
Carpenter, a senior on the Union Academy swim team, medaled 1st in the 500-yard freestyle with a personal best time of 4:49.23. The senior added to his medal count from the 1A/2A Central Regional Championship by placing 2nd in the 200-yard freestyle with another personal best time of 1:45.76.
Weekly recipients will be recognized on the NCHSAA Website and social media pages. They will also be honored at a banquet for all recipients from this year in April. The deadline for nominations is each Monday at 5 p.m. through the online form that can be found here.
