BROUGHTON OUTLASTS GRIMSLEY IN OVERTIME
FOR NCHSAA STATE 4-A MEN’S SOCCER CHAMPIONSHIP
RALEIGH – Junior Brandon Haynes scored two goals in overtime to lift Raleigh Broughton to an exciting 3-2 decision over Greensboro Grimsley in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 4-A men’s soccer championship Saturday night at the Durham Bulls Soccer Stadium at the WRAL Soccer Center.
After the regulation 80 minutes ended at 1-1, Haynes broke the deadlock with a header with 2:20 remaining in the first 10-minute extra stanza. Then four minutes later he connected on a second goal to give the Caps a 3-1 lead, cementing his eventual selection as the Most Valuable Player of the championship.
Grimsley wasn’t done, though, as Michael Gehrke headed home his second goal of the match with 4:33 remaining in the second overtime period. And about a minute later the Whirlies almost got the equalizer on a wild scramble in front of the goal during which a Grimsley shot hit the crossbar.
Grimsley had forced the overtime by knotting the game at 1-1 in the 74th minute with some great ball movement. Thomas Driver sent the ball to Josh Katz, whose service was headed home perfectly by Gehrke to tie the score.
Broughton opened the scoring in the eighth minute of play when Kevin Stam’s header found the back of the net after a pass from Watt Williams for a 1-0 Caps lead.
Broughton won its second consecutive NCHSAA soccer crown and finished the season on a 27-match winning streak. The Caps closed the year at 28-0-1, with the only blemish a 1-1 tie with Durham Jordan in the second game of the season.
Grimsley, playing in its fourth men’s final overall and first since 1993, is still looking for its first men’s state soccer crown. The Whirlies wound up at 20-4-1 overall and had a 10-match winning streak halted.
Broughton’s back-to-back state titles marked the first time since 1988-89 that an NCHSAA 4-A men’s team had won consecutive soccer championships, when Raleigh Sanderson accomplished the feat.

FOXX’S 3 GOALS LEADS LAKE NORMAN TO OT WIN
IN NCHSAA STATE 3-A MEN’S SOCCER CHAMPIONSHIP
RALEIGH – Senior forward Matt Foxx scored a hat trick on Friday night to lead Lake Norman to a thrilling 4-2 overtime triumph over Wilson Fike in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 3-A men’s soccer championship at the Durham Bulls Soccer Stadium at the WRAL Soccer Center.
Foxx, who scored his three goals in a 12-minute stretch in regulation and the first overtime, was named the Most Valuable Player of the championship. Lake Norman finished the season with a perfect 29-0 mark in winning its second consecutive NCHSAA state 2-A championship and its 56th consecutive game.
Wilson Fike was seemingly in command with a 2-0 advantage and less than 10 minutes to play, as the Golden Demons scored the first goals against Lake Norman to be tallied in postseason play this year. Austin King scored both goals for the Golden Demons.
But then Foxx connected twice in 85 seconds, firing the game-tying tally from the right side of the box to just inside the left post at the 72:10 mark.
Then a Foxx header less than three minutes into the first overtime proved to be the game winner. Foxx, the North Piedmont Conference Player of the Year, ended the season with 35 goals.
Fike, which set a school record for victories and shutouts in a single season, wound up 21-5-1.

NCSSM NIPS EAST MONTGOMERY 1-0 TO WIN
NCHSAA STATE 1-A MEN’S SOCCER CHAMPIONSHIP
RALEIGH – Junior midfielder Parris Smallwood scored the only goal of the game to lift the Durham North Carolina School of Science and Math to a 1-0 victory over East Montgomery in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 1-A men’s soccer championship on Friday at the Durham Bulls Soccer Stadium at the WRAL Soccer Center.
The game’s lone goal came in the 57th minute of action after a scoreless first half in which East Montgomery had a couple of good scoring opportunities.
The Unicorns’ Ken Addison, who was chosen as the championship Most Valuable Player, dribbled down the right side and then delivered a timely cross that Smallwood put away for the game winner.
Both teams were making their first appearances in the NCHSAA finals. The Unicorns finished the season at 19-4-1 while East Montgomery lost for only the second time all year against 22 wins and a tie.
