NCHSAA 2-A WOMEN’S TENNIS
PAIRINGS SET FOR NCHSAA 2-A CHAMPIONSHIP TENNIS MATCHES
CARY — Katelyn Storey of Salisbury, the 2010 state runner-up, won three matches Friday to move into the singles championship in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 2-A women’s tennis tournament championships on a chilly and damp Friday.
Almost all of the matches were played at the Cary Tennis Center, although a persistent rain moved the last two matches of the day from the outdoor courts to indoor courts at North Carolina State University. Three rounds were played on Friday, leaving only the championship matches Saturday morning.
Storey will face Kalli Karas of Waxhaw Cuthbertson for the state 2-A championship. Karas beat Carson Shell of Catawba Bandys 7-5, 6-2 in a semifinal match that was finished indoors.
Hilary Lutz of Shelby, the defending singles champion, lost in the quarterfinals in straight sets to Carrboro’s Danielle Sawyer.
In doubles, the Hillsborough Cedar Ridge pair of Anna Kankanala and Hannah Marion swept three matches in straight sets to move to the finals. They will play the Salisbury team of Joy Loeblein and Erika Nelson, which ousted Nancy and Emily Bridges of Shelby in the other semifinal match that started outside and wound up on the indoor courts at N.C. State. The Salisbury team rallied for a 5-7, 7-5, 6-3 victory.
The championship matches will return to the N.C. State indoor courts beginning at 8:30 Saturday morning.
