Second Weekend Of NCHSAA Track And Field Scheduled

Second Weekend of NCHSAA Track and Field Championships Set For Irwin Belk Track at North Carolina A&T on Friday, Saturday

GREENSBORO–Top athletes from across the state of North Carolina will compete in a second consecutive busy weekend of track as the North Carolina High School Athletic Association wraps up its state track and field championships.

This weekend features 3-A championships for both men and women on Friday, and then on Saturday the 4-A championships will be held, all at the Irwin Belk Track on the campus of North Carolina A&T State University.

Action in the field events will begin at 10 am and running events will start at 11 am. It will be the 90th annual men’s championships and the 39th annual renewal of the women’s event.

New Bern has won the last four 4-A men’s team championships, although Southeast Raleigh won the East Regional last weekend. Other regional winners are Charlotte Vance, Pfafftown Reagan and Raleigh Broughton.

Waxhaw Marvin Ridge captured the 2009 team title in the 3-A men’s meet. The regional meet champs for this year are Asheville, Kannapolis A.L. Brown and East Rowan as co-champs in the Midwest, Eastern Alamance and Southern Nash.

Asheville T.C. Roberson is seeking its third women’s track and field title in the last four years, although Roberson has moved up to the 4-A classification in this realignment. Southeast Raleigh is the defending 4-A women’s champion, and both of those schools won their respective regional meets over the weekend. Other 4-A women’s regional winners include Winston-Salem Mount Tabor and Raleigh Wakefield.

The 3-A women’s regional champions from last weekend are North Buncombe, Weddington, Northern Guilford and Winterville South Central.

Admission to the championships each day is six dollars.

The Greensboro Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Greensboro Sports Commission are serving as the host city sponsors for the event.

The 1-A and 2-A meets were held last weekend.
