Second Weekend Of Track And Field Championships

Another Weekend Of NCHSAA Track and Field ChampionshipsScheduled For North Carolina A&T

     GREENSBORO — Top athletes from across the state of North Carolina will compete in a second consecutive weekend of track and field as the North Carolina High School Athletic Association holds state championships in two more classifications.

      This weekend of competition will feature 1-A championships for both men and women on Friday, and then on Saturday the 2-A championships will be held, all at the Irwin Belk Track on the campus of North Carolina A&T State University.

    The 3-A and 4-A meets were held last weekend.

    Action in the field events will begin at 10 am and running events will start at 11 am. It will be the 91st annual men’s championships and the 40th annual renewal of the women’s event.

   Burlington Cummings has won the last five 2-A women’s championships while Salisbury is the two-time defending men’s team champion in that classification. North Rowan was the 1-A team champion among women’s teams in 2010 while Durham’s North Carolina School of Science and Math won its second men’s state crown in four years last year.

The two defending 1-A team champions had outstanding performances in the regional qualifying meets last weekend. Both North Rowan and NCSSM won both men’s and women’s team titles in their respective regionals. Other regional team champs include Robbinsville and Pamlico in men’s competition and Hendersonville and Lejeune among the women.

In 2-A, the men’s regional champions include East Lincoln, Berry Academy (with defending state champ Salisbury in second in the Midwest Regional), Burlington Cummings and North Brunswick, while the women’s winners were North Lincoln, Salisbury, Carrboro and Swansboro.

Admission to the state championship each day is six dollars.

 The Greensboro Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Greensboro Sports Commission are serving as the host city sponsors for the event.
