NCHSAA MEN’S 1-A TENNIS

CARY — Hendersonville’s Tyler Grove outlasted Fabrice Kalmbacher of Misenheimer Gray Stone Day School to win the singles title on Saturday morning in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 1-A men’s tennis tournament championships at the Cary Tennis Center.

Grove, who had lost to Kalmbacher in the West Regional finals last weekend, won the tough three-setter by 7-6(3), 4-6, 6-2.

It was the first time since 2002 that a Mount Airy player hadn’t played for the 1-A singles crown, but a pair of Mount Airy teams squared off for the doubles championship. Nick John and Matt Johnson defeated Bear teammates Chase Pumerantz and Dusty Roberson in a repeat of last weekend’s West Regional final, which was won by Pumerantz and Roberson. John and Johnson prevailed this time 6-3 in the third set after splitting the first two sets.

The Greater Raleigh Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Raleigh Sports Consortium were host city sponsors for the event. Wendy’s and the Carolina Ford Dealers are presenting sponsors of the NCHSAA sports program.
