South Brunswick’s Sloup Leads 3-A; Ledford On Top In Team Standings

SOUTH BRUNSWICK’S SLOUP PACES INDIVIDUALS; LEDFORD TOPS TEAMSAFTER FIRST DAY OF PLAY IN NCHSAA 3-A WOMEN’S GOLF

SOUTHERN PINES—South Brunswick’s Ashley Sloup has a one-shot advantage in the individual standings after Monday’s opening day of play in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association’s state 3-A women’s golf championships at the Longleaf Golf and Country Club.

Sloup had a 76 on a day filled with difficult playing conditions and has a one-shot edge over Tara Simmons of Pikeville Charles B. Aycock, who earned medalist honors in the state championship a year ago. Chandler Danielson of West Henderson is third at 79.

The championship layout is a par 71 and 5,770 yards.

Ledford is the defending 3-A team champion and has opened a nine-shot lead over the field. Ledford fired a 255 to 264 for West Henderson, with Northern Guilford third at 269 and Raleigh Cardinal Gibbons in fourth at 270.

The best three scores of a team count toward the team totals, and a total of 12 teams and 78 golfers are competing in the event, the 10th year that the sport has been classified. It is the second time that three separate championships have been held and the 32nd year for state championship competition in the sport.

The final day of play is scheduled to get underway at 9:00 on Tuesday morning.
