Students From A.C. Reynolds, Broughton Earn Performance of Week Awards

CHAPEL HILL— Anna Vess of Asheville’s A.C. Reynolds High School and Jeremy Brown of Broughton High School in Raleigh have been named winners of the NCHSAA Performance of the Week awards, powered by Time Warner Cable Sports Channel with Jersey Mike’s Subs®.

Each week one male and one female athlete in North Carolina High School Athletic Association competition are selected for this award from nominations received from media and school administrators.

Both of this week’s honorees earned their second individual state cross country titles during rainy, difficult conditions at the Ivey Redmon Sports Complex in Kernersville, site of the NCHSAA state championships.

Vess, a senior competing in her last cross country event for A.C. Reynolds, took her second consecutive 3-A women’s title by more than 15 seconds over the field, recording a winning time of 18:49.57.  A.C. Reynolds won up placing fifth in the overall team standings.

Vess was the Asheville Citizen-Times All-Western North Carolina Runner of the Year a year ago.

Brown captured his second straight 4-A men’s individual championship with an excellent time of 15:44.62, just under six seconds ahead of his nearest competitor.  The senior helped lead Broughton to a second-place team finish in the standings, although the Capitals had their string of four straight state team titles snapped by an excellent effort by Winston-Salem Mount Tabor, who won the crown.

TWC Sports Channel typically announces the winners of the awards during its Tuesday night SportsNight show and will recognize the winners throughout the week. Weekly recipients will also be recognized via Twitter and Facebook.
