CHAPEL HILL— Haleigh Guenther from Bessemer City High School and Coby Ingle from Rockingham County High School have been named recipients of the NCHSAA Performance of the Week awards, powered by Spectrum SportsChannel.
Each week two athletes in North Carolina High School Athletic Association competition are selected for this award from nominations received from media and school administrators.
Guenther, a sophomore on the Bessemer City softball team, pitched a gem against rival Cherryville. She recorded strikeouts for 20 of the 21 outs in the game while only allowing 5 hits and two walks in the 9-2 Yellow Jacket win. She also contributed at the plate, going two for four on the afternoon. The 20 strikeouts in a regulation game is tied for seventh on the all-time NCHSAA list and is the school record for a Bessemer City pitcher.
Ingle, a freshman at Rockingham County on the baseball team, spun a complete game shutout against cross-county rival Reidsville. The freshman pitcher struck out 10 on the outing while only allowing four hits and a single walk in his seven innings as the Cougars held on for a 1-0 win. Ingle is 4-0 on the year with a 1.27 ERA through his four appearances with opponents batting .193 against him.
Spectrum SportsChannel typically announces the winners of the awards during its Sports Night show and will recognize the winners throughout the week. Weekly recipients will also be recognized via Twitter and Facebook. The deadline for nominations is each Monday at 5 p.m through the online form that can be found here.
