Students From Cardinal Gibbons, Bunn Earn NCHSAA Performance of Week Awards

CHAPEL HILL— Olivia Smith of Cardinal Gibbons High School in Raleigh and Tevin Perry of Bunn High School have been named winners of the NCHSAA Performance of the Week awards, powered by Time Warner Cable Sports Channel with Jersey Mike’s Subs®.

Each week two athletes in North Carolina High School Athletic Association competition, one male and one female, are selected for this award from nominations received from media and school administrators.

Smith, a four-year starter on the Cardinal Gibbons women’s basketball team, began the Thanksgiving holiday in style last week with a 37-point, 13-rebound performance in the Crusaders’ 62-60 victory over Raleigh Broughton.

That included an amazing 23-point outburst in the third quarter. For the game, Smith hit four three-pointers and converted all five of her foul shots. She entered this season with more than 1,200 career points.

Perry, a senior halfback on the Bunn football team, helped propel his team to a thrilling 36-29 victory over East Duplin in the NCHSAA 2-AA football playoffs and a berth in the Eastern Regional championship game.

Perry carried the ball 20 times for 138 yards, including five times in the decisive game-winning drive that was culminated by his 28-yard touchdown run with 1:07 to play.

The Bunn standout scored three touchdowns, on runs of 14, six and 28 yards.

TWC Sports Channel typically announces the winners of the awards during its Tuesday night SportsNight show and will recognize the winners throughout the week. Weekly recipients will also be recognized via Twitter and Facebook.
