STUDENTS FROM FRANKLIN ACADEMY, GREENVILLE ROSE
EARN PERFORMANCE OF THE WEEK AWARDS
CHAPEL HILL— Nick Hughes of Franklin Academy in Wake Forest and Dontavies “E.J.” Harris of Rose High School in Greenville have been named winners of the NCHSAA Performance of the Week awards, powered by Time Warner Cable Sports Channel with Jersey Mike’s Subs®.
Each week two athletes in North Carolina High School Athletic Association competition are selected for this award from nominations received from media and school administrators.
Hughes, a senior striker and co-captain on the Franklin Academy men’s soccer team, helped lead his squad to its first ever NCHSAA men’s soccer championship, beating Community School of Davidson 3-1 for the 1-A state title at Dail Soccer Field at N.C. State University.
Hughes had a hat trick, scoring all three of his team’s goals, and was a unanimous choice for Most Valuable Player of the championship match. His scoring outburst in the final ended his season with a whopping 55 goals as Franklin Academy finished with a 22-1-2 record on the campaign.
Harris, a 5-10, 184-pound junior running back on the Rose football team, provided the impetus to lift the Rampants to a thrilling 42-41 playoff victory on the road over Fayetteville Cape Fear.
The Rose standout rushed 25 times for 262 yards and scored four touchdowns, tallying on runs of 52, 44, one and 30 yards. His 30-yard TD proved to be the game-clinching score with 3:25 left to play.
TWC Sports Channel typically announces the winners of the awards during its Tuesday night SportsNight show and will recognize the winners throughout the week. Weekly recipients will also be recognized via Twitter and Facebook.
