STUDENTS FROM LANEY & THOMAS JEFFERSON CLASSICAL EARN PERFORMANCE OF THE WEEK AWARDS

CHAPEL HILL— Caroline Cahill of Laney High School and Hayden Alexander from Thomas Jefferson Classical Academy have been named recipients of the NCHSAA Performance of the Week awards, powered by Time Warner Cable SportsChannel.

Each week two athletes in North Carolina High School Athletic Association competition are selected for this award from nominations received from media and school administrators.

Cahill, a senior at Laney, won the NCHSAA Central Regional Golf Championship carding a 73 on Pinehurst No. 1. During the regular season Caroline led the Buccaneers women’s golf team to their second consecutive conference championship and was named player of the year in the conference. She has committed to play collegiately golf at UNC-Wilmington.

Alexander, a senior at Thomas Jefferson and a member of the cross country and soccer teams, ran in the Southern Piedmont Conference 1A Championship. His time of 16:34 completing the course at Fisher Farms in Davidson won the race and set a new school record. He was named the SPC Runner of the year for the fourth year in a row. On the soccer field, Alexander netted a pair of hat tricks, one on the day before and one the day after the race.      

TWC SportsChannel typically announces the winners of the awards during its Sports Night show and will recognize the winners throughout the week. Weekly recipients will also be recognized via Twitter and Facebook. The deadline for nominations is each Monday at 5 p.m through the online form that can be found here.
