Students From North Duplin, St. Stephens Earn NCHSAA Performance of Week Awards

CHAPEL HILL—Julissa Quintanilla of North Duplin High School and Spencer Brown of St. Stephens High School in Hickory have been named winners of the NCHSAA Performance of the Week awards, powered by Time Warner Cable Sports Channel with Jersey Mike’s Subs®.

Each week one male and one female athlete in North Carolina High School Athletic Association competition are selected for this award from nominations received from media and school administrators.

Quintanilla, a senior on North Duplin’s women’s tennis team, just wrapped up her fourth consecutive Carolina 1-A Conference singles championship, the first female in the history of North Duplin to accomplish that feat.

In her last two seasons, she has compiled a brilliant 40-1 singles record, with her only loss in the 2014 NCHSAA state 1-A championship match after she had earned the regional title.

Brown had a game for the ages as he led St. Stephens to a thrilling 48-45 football victory over crosstown rival Hickory in a game that featured seven lead changes.

The senior quarterback carried the football 28 times for a whopping 342 yards and scored five touchdowns, while completing 10 of 18 passes for 132 yards and two more scores.  That meant he accounted for 474 yards in total offense and seven touchdowns as St. Stephens beat Hickory on the St. Stephens home field for the first time in school history and also recorded victories in consecutive years in the rivalry for the first time ever.

TWC Sports Channel typically announces the winners of the awards during its Tuesday night SportsNight show and will recognize the winners throughout the week. Weekly recipients will also be recognized via Twitter and Facebook.
