STUDENTS FROM PAGE & HICKORY RIDGE EARN PERFORMANCE OF THE WEEK AWARDS

CHAPEL HILL— Will Jones from Page High School and Jarren Cottingham from Hickory Ridge High School have been named recipients of the NCHSAA Performance of the Week awards, powered by Time Warner Cable SportsChannel.

Each week two athletes in North Carolina High School Athletic Association competition are selected for this award from nominations received from media and school administrators.

Jones, a senior quarterback on the Pirates State Championship Game bound football squad, accounted for 310 yards in the Pirates 49-14 Regional Final victory over Z.B. Vance. He threw for 278 yards and 3 TD’s while rushing for 32 yards and 3 more scores. The Pirates take on Wake Forest in the 4AA Championship Game Saturday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. at Carter-Finley Stadium in Raleigh.

Cottingham, a senior on the basketball team at Hickory Ridge, had a great week on the court in three league games for the Ragin’ Bulls. Tuesday against East Rowan he totaled 16 points, 5 assists, 4 rebounds and 2 steals in a 72-59 road win. Then on Wednesday at Concord he scored 12 points, including 2 free throws with just over 10 seconds to go to seal the 76-75 overtime win, adding four rebounds, six assists and three steals. Thursday night against defending 3A Champions J.M. Robinson, Cottingham exploded for 29 points making the game-winning lay-up as time expired on a 76-75 road victory.

TWC SportsChannel typically announces the winners of the awards during its Sports Night show and will recognize the winners throughout the week. Weekly recipients will also be recognized via Twitter and Facebook. The deadline for nominations is each Monday at 5 p.m through the online form that can be found here.
