STUDENTS FROM ROXBORO COMMUNITY & WEST MONTGOMERY EARN PERFORMANCE OF THE WEEK AWARDS

CHAPEL HILL— Mya Johnson from Roxboro Community School and Jo Leake from West Montgomery High School have been named recipients of the NCHSAA Performance of the Week awards, powered by Time Warner Cable SportsChannel.

Each week two athletes in North Carolina High School Athletic Association competition are selected for this award from nominations received from media and school administrators.

Johnson, a senior on the Bulldogs basketball team, recorded a pair of big performances during the school’s inaugural Thanksgiving tournament. She poured in 16 points and hit 7 of 11 free throws to help Roxboro Community past Word of God 50-44 in the first round. Then she followed that up with a 28-point night, including five three-pointers in the Bulldogs’ 64-54 loss to the South Australian All-Star travel team.

Leake, a senior at West Montgomery, rushed for 380 yards on just 17 carries while tying a state record for rushing touchdowns in a game by scoring 8 times on the ground in West’s 70-42 win over Swain County. Leake scored from 32, 69, 2, 63, 47, 35, 46 and 1 yard out on the night. He was named the Yadkin Valley Conference player of the year a season ago and was a member of the school’s 2015 4 X 100 meter relay state championship team.

TWC SportsChannel typically announces the winners of the awards during its Sports Night show and will recognize the winners throughout the week. Weekly recipients will also be recognized via Twitter and Facebook. The deadline for nominations is each Monday at 5 p.m through the online form that can be found here.
