DAVID BUTLER MOVES INTO CHAMPIONSHIP GAME
RALEIGH— Constance Orr picked up a pair of pitching victories as defending state champion Matthews David Butler moved into the championship game of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 4-A softball championships at Walnut Creek Softball Complex on Friday night.
Unbeaten Butler, now 27-0, had to rally from a 2-0 deficit in its opener against North Davidson before rallying to win 5-2 and then blanked Durham Riverside 1-0. Orr struck out 12 and allowed just two hits against Riverside while fanning 16 and pitching a two-hitter against North Davidson.
Jessica Bowen had three hits, including a pair of doubles, for Butler against North while Chelsea Ingersoll had three runs batted in. Melinda Collins collected three hits in three trips for Butler in the win over Riverside, but the big blow was a run scoring double by Chelsea Stamey that scored Jessica Rappe with the only run of the game.
Riverside had advanced with a 2-1 victory over Apex Middle Creek, scoring two runs in the seventh to rally to win. Jenn Ladd, with 14 strikeouts, was the winning pitcher while Beth Anne Kleekamp got the loss.
Kleekamp was also the tough-luck loser in a 2-1 loss to North Davidson in the elimination game. Middle Creek ended the year with a 22-4 mark.
North Davidson (26-4) takes on Riverside (21-3) at 11 am Saturday and the winner will advance to take on David Butler for the championship. If a team from the loser’s bracket wins that game, then another will follow at 4 p.m. to decide the title.
