2008-2009 Wachovia Conference Cup Winners Announced
Wachovia, a Wells Fargo company, along with the North Carolina High School Athletic Association, today announced the final standings in the Wachovia Cup competitions for the 2008-2009 sports season.
The Wachovia Cup award, sponsored by Wachovia and the NCHSAA, recognizes the high schools that achieve the best overall interscholastic athletic performance within each of the state’s four competitive classifications. Wachovia has sponsored the conference awards program since 1980.
The Wachovia Conference Cup—formerly known as the Wachovia Trophy—is a companion to the Wachovia Cup, a statewide award give to schools with the best overall interscholastic athletic performance in each of the four classifications.
In most conferences, points are awarded based on participation and standings in conference play. Each conference determines its own method of awarding points. Conferences are listed alphabetically by classification.
Class 1-A Conference Results
Atlantic 1-A: Second place finishes in both baseball and softball enabled Williamston to hold off the rest of the league and win the conference cup. Southside finished the year a close second after winning championships in baseball and softball. Conference Standings: Williamston 50.5, Southside 46, Roanoke 43, Northside 40.5.
Albemarle 1-A: A league title in softball and a third place finish in baseball allowed Manteo to capture this year’s title. Camden is the conference runner-up on the strength of a second place finish in softball. Perquimans rounds out the top three, thanks to a championship in baseball. Carolina 1-A: North Johnston is the winner after ending the spring with league championships in golf, tennis, and a share of first place in softball. Top finishes in baseball, track, and a tie for first in softball helped Rosewood finish in second place in the conference. Ayden-Grifton is right behind in third place after capturing the men’s and women’s track crowns. Coastal Plains 1-A: Topsail swept to the Conference Cup after winning titles in golf, tennis, and women’s track and soccer this spring. Dixon ended in second place thanks to a baseball championship. Northwest 1-A: Bishop McGuinness managed to hold its lead in the conference following the winter season, clinching with league championships in golf and a tie for first place in both baseball and soccer. A tennis title and a runner-up finish in men’s track allowed Mount Airy to nail down the second place slot in the conference race. South Stokes rounds out the top three on the strength of a tie for first in soccer and third place finishes in golf and men’s track. Smoky Mountain 1-A: A first, second, and third place finish in baseball, softball, and women’s track, respectively, helped propel Murphy to the championship. Swain ended the spring in second place in the conference race after capturing league titles in softball and women’s track. Hayesville placed third on the strength of runner-up finishes in golf and men’s track. Super Six 1-A: Midway is this year’s winner after capturing league crowns in baseball, softball, and golf. James Kenan is the conference runner-up after ending the spring in first place in women’s track and second in soccer. Union is third, thanks to a tie for first place in softball. Tar Roanoke 1-A: Louisburg vaulted all the way from third to first place during the course of the spring season to capture the Cup. The second place team is Weldon, followed by Gates County. Tideland 1-A: Jamesville is the Cup winner after capturing league championships in both baseball and softball this spring. Cape Hatteras is the runner-up with Creswell rounding out the top three. Yadkin Valley 1-A: Jordan-Matthews dominated the conference this spring, winning the Cup on the strength of league championships in baseball, women’s soccer, and men’s and women’s track. East Montgomery ended the year a close second with a men’s tennis title and third place finishes in golf and women’s soccer. Chatham Central is close behind in third place after winning a golf championship, placing second in women’s track, and tying for third in baseball. Mid-State 1-A/2-A: League crowns in men’s golf, tennis, track, and women’s soccer helped propel Cardinal Gibbons to the title. Orange is the second place team after ending the spring as the runner-up in baseball, softball, and women’s track. Northwood is third, thanks to a conference title in softball. Southeastern 1-A/2-A: League championships in softball and golf helped propel West Bladen to victory. Men’s and women’s track titles allowed St. Paul’s to end the year in second place. East Bladen rounds out the top three after finishing as the runner-up in softball and the third-place team in baseball. Southern Piedmont 1-A/2-A: East Lincoln captured this year’s conference cup with titles in baseball and men’s track. The second place team is North Lincoln after winning league championships in golf and women’s track. Waccamaw 1-A/2-A: South Brunswick is the Waccamaw 1A/2A conference cup champion after taking league titles in men’s golf, women’s track and soccer. Pender is the runner-up, thanks to a league crown in softball and a third place finish in women’s soccer. Top finishes in men’s track and baseball helped North Brunswick place third in the conference. Western Highlands 1-A/2-A: Polk County takes the conference cup this year after placing first in baseball and women’s soccer, as well as finishing second in men’s track, golf, and tennis. League championships in men’s track and tennis helped Hendersonville take second place. Charles D. Owen rounds out the top three thanks to a first place tie in softball and a conference title in women’s track. Class 2-A Conference Results
Central Carolina 2-A: Championships in men’s golf, men’s and women’s track, and a tie for first place in men’s tennis helped propel Salisbury to the top spot in the Cup race this year. Ledford ended the season in second place thanks to a league title in softball and a first place tie in men’s tennis. Conference championships in baseball and women’s soccer allowed West Davidson to take third. East Central 2-A: Croatan is the Cup winner thanks to league crowns in baseball, women’s tennis and women’s cross country. East Duplin is the second place team, after capturing conference championships in men’s tennis and volleyball. Swansboro rounded out the top three with titles in women’s track and women’s soccer. Eastern Plains 2-A: The Cup belongs to Farmville Central on the strength of championships in golf and softball. North Pitt ended the spring in second after taking league titles in men’s and women’s track. Greene Central is the third place team, with conference crowns in men’s and women’s tennis. Mountain Valley 2-A: Wilkes Central is the Cup winner this year, thanks to top finishes in men’s tennis and golf, in addition to a second place finish in women’s tennis and men’s tennis. Starmount was the runner-up in the league after capturing championships in men’s baseball and men’s tennis. Ashe County was third with a league crown in women’s tennis. North State 2-A: West Stokes captured this year’s Cup after a superb spring that resulted in league titles in men’s tennis, softball, and women’s soccer, as well as second place finishes in golf, baseball, and women’s track. Reidsville is the conference runner-up, with second-place finishes in men’s tennis and women’s soccer. Northern Carolina 2-A: Bunn is the Cup winner on the strength of a title in women’s track, runner-up finishes in baseball and golf, and a tie for third place in softball. Roanoke Rapids is the runner-up after a spring season that included championships in baseball, golf, and women’s soccer, second place finishes in men’s tennis and men’s track, and a third place tie in softball. Southern Vance finished third, thanks to outright titles in softball and men’s tennis, a second place finish in women’s track, and third place finishes in baseball and golf. Western Athletic 2-A: West Henderson managed to hold onto its winter points lead, winning the Cup on the strength of league titles in soccer, golf, and women’s track. North Henderson was the runner-up while a men’s track championship enables East Henderson to end the year in third place. Class 2-A/3-A Conference Results
Catawba Valley 2-A/3-A: Hickory clinched the Cup after the conclusion of the spring season, thanks to a men’s golf title and second place finishes in women’s soccer and women’s track. Fred T. Foard is the runner-up after second place finishes in men’s golf and men’s track. League championships in women’s soccer and softball enabled St. Stephens to nail down the third place position at the conclusion of the spring season. Conference Standings: Hickory 233, Fred T. Northeastern Coastal 2-A/3-A: First Flight captured the Cup in dominating fashion thanks to outright titles in baseball, women’s track, golf, tennis, and soccer. Northeastern was the second place team with titles of its own in baseball and softball, on top of third place finishes in golf and tennis. Currituck completes the top three with a runner-up finish in women’s track and third place finishes in men’s track and soccer. Southwestern 2-A/3-A: Shelby took the Cup following a spring season in which it won championships in tennis and men’s track. R-S Central ended in second place with conference crowns in golf and women’s track. League titles in baseball and women’s soccer helped Kings Mountain nail down the third-place position. Class 3-A Conference Results
Cape Fear Valley 3-A: Harnett Central is the Cup champion after winning spring titles in baseball and softball, in addition to third place finishes in women’s soccer and men’s and women’s track. Triton was the runner-up with a league crown in softball, a second place finish in baseball, and a third place finish in golf. Union Pines secured third on the strength of conference championships in women’s soccer and men’s tennis, as well as a runner-up finish in golf. Eastern Carolina 3-A: A men’s golf and women’ soccer title, in addition to a second place finish in softball, was all Hunt needed to secure the Cup. Eastern Wayne was just behind in second place thanks to a baseball crown, as well as runner-up finishes in golf, soccer, tennis, and women’s track. The third place team in the conference race was Beddingfield, who captured second place in men’s track and third place in golf, soccer, softball, and women’s track. Mid Piedmont 3-A: Ragsdale clinched the Cup following a spring season in which it captured championships in baseball, soccer, tennis, and men’s track. A women’s track title and second place finishes in golf, tennis, and women’s track allowed Southeast Guilford to end the year as the runner-up. Asheboro was third overall, thanks to a second place finish in baseball and third place finishes in men’s track and tennis, the latter being a tie. Rocky Mount is a close second after winning a league crown in women’s track, tying for first place in baseball, and finishing second in women’s soccer and men’s tennis. Nash Central was third thanks to a championship in men’s track and a runner-up finish in women’s track. North Piedmont 3-A: Lake Norman ended a successful spring athletic season with a Cup victory after capturing league championships in tennis, baseball, and golf. Northwest Cabarrus was third, with titles in softball and a tie for first in women’s track. South Piedmont 3-A: Marvin Ridge ended the spring on a high note, clinching the Cup with championships in baseball and men’s and women’s track. Porter Ridge rounded out the top three with a league crown in softball and a third place finish in men’s golf. The runner-up in the conference is New Hanover, with second place finishes in men’s golf, men’s tennis, and women’s track. The third place team is Laney who won a baseball championship in addition to a runner-up finish in softball and third place finishes in men’s golf and men’s tennis. Queen City 3-A/4-A: Charlotte Catholic dominated the spring athletic season, winning the Cup on the strength of league crowns in baseball, women’s soccer, golf, men’s tennis, and men’s track. Olympic was the runner-up, with second place finishes in golf, men’s tennis, and women’s soccer. West Mecklenburg took third with a conference title in softball and a second place finish in baseball. Class 4-A Conference Results
CAP Seven 4-A: Broughton maintained its winter points lead, capturing the Cup with outright championships in men’s track and golf, runner-up finishes in women’s soccer and baseball, and a tie for third place in men’s tennis. Leesville Road was second thanks to a women’s soccer title, a runner-up finish in women’s track and a third place finish in men’s golf. Enloe rounded out the top three with third place finishes in softball and women’s track. East Forsyth was right behind in third, with a first place tie in baseball and a women’s soccer championship. Ardrey Kell placed third, thanks to league crowns in men’s tennis, men’s track, and women’s soccer, as well as a runner-up finish in baseball. Two Rivers 4-A: South View enjoyed a strong spring, capturing the Cup with league crowns in men’s and women’s track, baseball, and softball. Terry Sanford was a close second on the strength of titles in men’s tennis, men’s golf, and women’s soccer. Lumberton was third after ending the spring as the runner-up in women’s soccer.
