2010 Fall Season Wachovia Conference Cup
Leaders Announced
Wachovia Bank, a Wells Fargo company, along with the North Carolina High School Athletic Association, today announced the standings for fall sports in the Wachovia Conference Cup competitions for the 2010-2011 sports season.
The Wachovia Cup award, sponsored by Wachovia and the NCHSAA, recognizes the high schools that achieve the best overall interscholastic athletic performance within each of the state’s four competitive classifications. Wachovia has sponsored the conference awards program since 1980.
The Wachovia Conference Cup, formerly known as the Wachovia Trophy, is a companion to the Wachovia Cup. The Conference Cup is awarded to schools with the best overall interscholastic athletic performance in each individual athletic conference.
In most conferences, points are awarded based on participation and standings in conference play. Each conference determines its own method of awarding points. Conferences are listed alphabetically by classification.
Class 1-A Conference Results
Carolina 1-A: Rosewood is in first place after the fall with a championship in volleyball and a second-place finish in men’s soccer. Ayden-Grifton is close behind in second, finishing first in women’s tennis and second in football. Spring Creek is in third, thanks to a championship in men’s soccer. Conference Standings: Rosewood 18.5, Ayden-Grifton 17, Spring Creek 12.5, Princeton 12, North Duplin 11.5, Goldsboro 10.5.
Coastal Plains 1-A: Dixon is out in front thanks to a conference crown in volleyball and a second-place finish in men’s soccer. Lejeune is second, with championships in women’s tennis and women’s cross county. First-place performances in football and men’s soccer have Southwest Onslow in third. Conference Standings: Dixon 250, Lejeune 200, Southwest Onslow 185, Pamlico 180, East Carteret 140, Jones Senior 105.
Four Rivers 1-A: Dominating the fall season with league titles in men’s soccer, football, and men’s and women’s cross country, Manteo sits in first. Riverside is in second with a first-place finish in volleyball. Second-place finishes in men’s and women’s cross country earn Northside third place. Smoky Mountain 1-A: In a fierce fight for first, Hayesville edges out Swain with second-place finishes in men’s and women’s cross country, and men’s soccer. Third-place finishes in women’s cross country and football put Swain in second overall. Robbinsville is in third after sweeping championships in men’s and women’s cross country. Tar Roanoke 1-A: Gates County leads the way with championships in men’s football and volleyball, and a second-place performance in men’s cross country. Runner-up finishes in football and volleyball have North Edgecombe in second place in the conference. KIPP Pride is in third, finishing first in men’s cross country. Tideland 1-A: A championship in volleyball earns Columbia first place in the conference after the fall season. Creswell is a close second after a first-place finish in football. Mattamuskeet and Cape Hatteras are tied for third. Conference Standings: Columbia 10, Creswell 8, Cape Hatteras 7, Mattamuskeet 7, Ocracoke 1.
Tri County 1-A: A close battle leaves Wallace-Rose Hill on top of the conference after finishing first in football and men’s soccer. Pender is just behind in second with a championship in volleyball and a second-place finish in football. Union is third after a solid fall performance. Yadkin Valley 1-A: East Montgomery and Gray Stone Day are in a deadlock for first. East Montgomery finished first in men’s soccer and women’s tennis while Gray Stone captured championships in men’s and women’s cross country, and finished second in men’s soccer. Albemarle is in third with a conference crown in volleyball and a runner-up finish in football. Class 1-A/2-A Conference Results
Carolina 10 1-A/2-A: Carrboro has the conference lead after the fall season, thanks to a championship in women’s cross country and a second-place finish in men’s cross country. Cedar Ridge finished the fall just ahead of the North Carolina School of Science and Math in second place with a conference crown in volleyball and a runner-up finish in football. NCSSM is in third with championships in women’s tennis, men’s soccer, and men’s cross country. Mountain Valley 1-A/2-A: Forbush captured a championship in men’s soccer, as well as finishing second in volleyball, men’s and women’s cross country, and women’s golf. Wilkes Central is currently the runner-up, finishing second in football. Ashe County is a close third with third-place finishes in women’s tennis and golf. Northwest 1-A/2-A: Mount Airy’s championships in football and tennis as well as its third-place finish in women’s golf earned the Granite Bears the top spot in the conference. Bishop McGuinness is second after a second-place finish in women’s tennis, and two ties for second, one in football and the other in soccer, with third-place Surry Central. Central also finished first in men’s cross country to solidify their third-place position. Rocky River 1-A/2-A: Cuthbertson leads the way after first-place finishes in men’s and women’s cross country, women’s tennis, and men’s soccer. West Stanly is in second, finishing second in men’s and women’s cross country, women’s tennis, and volleyball. Piedmont is a close third, thanks to a championship in volleyball. Southern Piedmont 1-A/2-A: A struggle for first leaves only one rival on top, as East Lincoln edges North Lincoln for first place in the conference. Lincolnton’s solid fall season has it in third. Three-Rivers 1-A/2-A: St. Paul’s is out in front thanks to championships in volleyball and men’s and women’s cross country. Conference titles in football and women’s tennis earn Fairmont the second-place position after the fall. Close behind in third is Red Springs, finishing first in men’s soccer. Western Highlands 1-A/2-A: With championships in men’s cross country and women’s golf, and a second-place finish in men’s soccer, Charles D. Owen holds off Hendersonville for the top spot. Hendersonville settles in second with conference crowns in men’s soccer and women’s cross country. Polk County is third, tying for first in both football and volleyball. Class 2-A Conference Results
Catawba Valley 2-A: Newton-Conover sits atop the conference after the fall season due to a championship in volleyball, and second-place finishes in football and men’s cross country. J.C. Draughn finished third in both women’s soccer and tennis, and is currently second overall. Maiden is not far behind in third with a championship in women’s tennis. Conference Standings: Newton-Conover 35, J.C. Draughn 31, Maiden 29.5, Bunker Hill 26.5, East Burke 25.5, Bandys 25, West Caldwell 22.5, South Iredell 20.
Central Carolina 2-A: League titles in women’s cross country, women’s tennis, men’s soccer, and football have Salisbury atop the conference standings at the end of the fall. Central Davidson is the runner-up, taking the conference crown in men’s cross country, and finishing second in women’s cross country and volleyball. West Davidson is third after a championship in volleyball and second-place finish in men’s soccer. Conference Standings: Salisbury 54.5, Central Davidson 50.5, West Davidson 48.5, East Davidson 44, Lexington 36, Thomasville 35.5.
East Central 2-A: There is a tie for the conference lead between Topsail and East Duplin. Topsail finished first in both volleyball and women’s golf, while East Duplin captured a championship in football and finished second in volleyball and men’s soccer. Croatan is in third, thanks to a league title in women’s cross country and a second-place performance in men’s cross country. Conference Standings: East Duplin 78, Topsail 78, Croatan 72, Swansboro 71, Richlands 61, Clinton 54, Northside 39, South Lenoir 39.
Eastern Plains 2-A: A solid fall season with conference crowns in football and men’s soccer, and a tie for first in women’s tennis, has Tarboro out in front after the fall. Beddingfield is second with a first-place finish in men’s cross country. North Pitt earns its third-place position, finishing second in men’s cross country. Mid-State 2-A: Jordan-Matthews is the conference leader at the end of the fall season after capturing a championship in men’s cross country and tying for first in women’s tennis and men’s cross country. Bartlett Yancey is currently second, with a championship in volleyball and second-place finishes in men’s soccer and women’s cross country. A tie for first with J-M in men’s cross country earned Providence Grove the third-place spot. Northern Carolina 2-A: A strong fall season for Roanoke Rapids resulted in league titles in football, men’s soccer, women’s cross country, and women’s tennis. North Johnston is in second, finishing second in men’s soccer and tied for second in volleyball. A championship in volleyball and second-place finishes in football and men’s cross country have Bunn in third. Piedmont 2-A: With conference crowns in volleyball and men’s cross country, and second-place finishes in men’s soccer and women’s tennis, Randleman earns the conference’s top spot. Trinity is currently second, capturing championships in men’s soccer and women’s cross country. Wheatmore is in third with a first-place finish in women’s tennis. Class 2-A/3-A Conference Results
Appalachian Athletic 2-A/3-A: West Henderson dominated the fall with championships in men’s soccer, women’s golf, women’s cross country, and volleyball, and sits comfortably in first. Pisgah and East Henderson tie for second as they both tied for first in football. Conference Standings: West Henderson 275, Pisgah 195, East Henderson 195, Franklin 190, Tuscola 175, Smoky Mountain 175, North Henderson 160, Brevard 150.
Northeastern Coastal 2-A/3-A: First Flight has the early lead in the conference with a league title in men’s cross country, a tie for first in women’s tennis with second-place Northeastern, and runner-up finishes in volleyball, women’s cross country, and men’s soccer. Northeastern fall finishes also included championships in volleyball, men’s soccer, and football. Currituck is in third, finishing first in women’s cross country. Conference Standings: First Flight 36, Northeastern 33, Currituck 27, Edenton 24, Hertford County 16, Pasquotank 14, Bertie 9.
South Mountain Athletic 2-A/3-A: Shelby and Patton are in a tie for first after the fall season. Patton finished first in men’s cross country, and Shelby captured championships in men’s soccer, women’s tennis, and women’s cross country. The third-place spot is also deadlocked between Freedom and Rutherfordton-Spindale Central. Freedom finished second in football, and R-S Central captured a championship in volleyball. Conference Standings: Patton 32, Shelby 32, Freedom 23, R-S Central 23, Burns 21, East Rutherford 20, Chase 20.
Waccamaw 2-A/3-A: Championships in women’s tennis, volleyball, and men’s soccer secure the top spot for South Brunswick. Cross county rival West Brunswick is in second with runner-up finishes in women’s tennis and volleyball. A football championship has South Columbus tied for third with East Bladen. Conference Standings: South Brunswick 41, West Brunswick 33, South Columbus 24, East Bladen 24, Whiteville 21.5, North Brunswick 18.5, West Bladen 16.
Class 3-A Conference Results
Big East 3-A: League titles in volleyball and men’s soccer as well as second-place finishes in men’s and women’s cross country have Rocky Mount atop the conference at the end of the fall season. Fike is in second with a championship in women’s cross country and a runner-up finish in women’s tennis. Third place belongs to Nash Central, thanks to first-place finishes in men’s cross country and women’s tennis. Conference Standings: Rocky Mount 65, Fike 62, Nash Central 60, Hunt 56.5, Southern Nash 44.5, Northern Nash 43.
Big South 3-A: South Point secures the top spot in the league with league titles in football and women’s golf. Forestview is on the heels of South Point after the fall season with a championship in men’s cross country. Ashbrook is also in the hunt for the first with top finishes in women’s cross country and tennis, and men’s soccer. Conference Standings: South Point 72.5, Forestview 72, Ashbrook 71.5, Kings Mountain 63, North Gaston 57, Crest 52.5, Hunter Huss 21.5.
Cape Fear Valley 3-A: The top three teams remain close after the fall season with Western Harnett on top after a championship in volleyball and second-place finishes in women’s cross country and tennis. Overhills captured a championship in women’s cross country and also finished second in football, earning them the conference’s second place position. Union Pines is in third, winning a championship in women’s tennis. Carolina 3-A: Cardinal Gibbons is the conference leader after the fall season, thanks to conference crowns in volleyball, women’s tennis, men’s soccer, and football as well as second-place finishes in men’s and women’s cross country. Chapel Hill is not too far behind in second, with championships in men’s and women’s cross country. Orange is currently in third with third-place finishes in volleyball, men’s soccer, and men’s and women’s cross country. Coastal 3-A: First-place finishes in women’s cross country and women’s golf, and a runner-up performance in men’s soccer, procures the top spot for West Carteret. South Central tied for first in both football and volleyball, and is in second overall in the conference. D.H. Conley and Havelock are tied for third. Conley captured a championship in women’s tennis as well sharing first in volleyball. Havelock tied with second-place South Central for the top spot in football, and took second in women’s cross country. Conference Standings: West Carteret 48.5, South Central 38, D.H. Eastern Carolina 3-A: South Johnston edges out Triton for the top spot in the conference, capturing championships in men’s cross country and soccer while Triton finished first in women’s cross country and volleyball. Southwestern Randolph is in third with a league title in women’s cross country. Mid State 3-A: Conference titles in men’s and women’s cross country, men’s golf, and men’s soccer have Northern Guilford atop the conference after the fall season. Walter Williams is in second place with a tie for first in women’s tennis, and second-place finishes in men’s and women’s cross country. Eastern Alamance sits in third after a tie for first in volleyball. North Piedmont 3-A: With championships in women’s tennis along with men’s and women’s cross country, East Rowan sits in first. Statesville and West Rowan are in a deadlock for second place. Statesville captured a championship in men’s soccer and tied for first with West Rowan in women’s golf. West Rowan also finished first in football. South Piedmont 3-A: Jay M. Robinson is in first after the fall season with league titles in men’s soccer and men’s and women’s cross country. Concord is a close second, tying Robinson for first in men’s soccer as well as a first-place finish in women’s tennis. Cox Mill is in third with a championship in women’s golf and a tie for first in women’s tennis with Concord. Conference Standings: Jay M. Mega 7 3-A/4-A: Charlotte Catholic dominated the fall season. finishing first in all fall sports. Olympic is in second after runner-up finishes in men’s and women’s cross country, and women’s golf. A second-place finish in volleyball has East Gaston in third. Conference Standings: Charlotte Catholic 49, Olympic 36, East Gaston 28, West Mecklenburg 18, Harding 15, E.E. Waddell 12, Garinger 10.
Mountain Athletic 3-A/4-A: Winning league titles in women’s tennis, women’s cross country, women’s golf, men’s cross country, and men’s soccer, T.C. Roberson holds the top spot in the conference. A.C. Reynolds is in second thanks to a championship in football, and North Buncombe is in third. Conference Standings: T.C. Roberson 80, A.C. Northwestern Athletic 3-A/4-A: Finishing just ahead of second-place Hickory, conference leader Watauga took fall championships in volleyball and women’s cross country, and tied for first in women’s tennis with Hickory, who also finished first in men’s soccer. Alexander Central is third not far behind the top two, thanks to championships in football and women’s golf. Southern Carolina 3-A/4-A: After a stellar fall season, Marvin Ridge leads the way with championships in volleyball, men’s soccer, and women’s tennis. Weddington finished first in women’s cross country and second in volleyball, and is second overall in the conference. Porter Ridge is in third after a first-place finish in football and a runner-up performance in men’s soccer. Class 4-A Conference Results:
Cap Eight 4-A: Broughton finished first in women’s tennis and takes the conference’s top spot after the fall season. Millbrook and Leesville Road are in a deadlock for second and are both close behind first-place Broughton. Millbrook earned a conference crown in women’s cross country while Leesville captured championships in men’s soccer and men’s cross country. Central Piedmont 4-A: A commanding fall performance from Mount Tabor has it atop the conference winning titles in men’s and women’s cross country, football, volleyball, and women’s tennis. Reagan is second with a championship in women’s golf and a share of the volleyball title with Mount Tabor. Davie rounds out the top three teams after a solid fall season. Conference Standings: Mount Tabor 310, Reagan 292.5, Davie 260, R.J. Reynolds 252.5, West Forsyth 250, North Davidson 210.
Greater Neuse River 4-A: Garner sits atop the conference after a dominating fall season, with championships in women’s golf, volleyball, and football. Clayton is in second with a first-place finish in women’s tennis. League titles in men’s and women’s cross country has West Johnston in third. I-Meck 4-A: Lake Norman captured championships in women’s cross country, women’s golf, and volleyball to take first in the conference after the fall. Mallard Creek sits in second with league titles in men’s cross country and football. North Mecklenburg and Mooresville share third place, thanks to North Meck’s championship in men’s soccer and Mooresville’s in women’s tennis. Metro 4-A: Page is in first place after a conference crown in men’s soccer, a tie for first in football, and second-place finishes in men’s and women’s cross country. Grimsley finished the fall in second with championships in women’s tennis and volleyball. Southern Alamance is a close third after first-place finishes in men’s and women’s cross country. Mid-Eastern 4-A: A championship in men’s soccer and second-place finishes in volleyball and women’s tennis propel Hoggard to the top of the conference. New Hanover is second with first-place honors in men’s and women’s cross country. Rose is in third thanks to league titles in volleyball and women’s tennis. Mid-South 4-A: Jack Britt beats out Terry Sanford for the first-place position in the conference thanks to a league title in volleyball. Terry Sanford finished first in men’s soccer, women’s tennis, and women’s cross country. South View is in third with a championship in men’s cross country. Pac-6 4-A: In a tight battle for first, East Chapel Hill edges Jordan to finish on top of the conference after the fall. East captured championships in women’s cross country and women’s tennis, while second-place Jordan finished first in men’s soccer and men’s cross country. Riverside is in third with a title in volleyball. Conference Standings: East Chapel Hill 32.5, Jordan 32, Riverside 29, Northern Durham 26, Person 20.5, Hillside 14, Southern Durham 11.
Piedmont Triad 4-A: A dominant fall performance with championships in women’s golf, men’s and women’s cross country, women’s tennis, men’s soccer, volleyball, and a tie for first with second-place Ragsdale in football have lifted Northwest Guilford to the top of the conference. Along with Ragsdale’s tie for first in football, it finished second in men’s cross country and women’s golf. East Forsyth, who tied for second in women’s tennis and third in men’s cross country, is tied for third overall with Southwest Guilford, who placed second in women’s cross country and women’s tennis. Southeastern 4-A: Pinecrest finishes the fall in first place, thanks to titles in men’s soccer, and women’s tennis, and a tie for first in women’s golf with second-place Scotland. Scotland also captured a championship in volleyball. Lumberton is third with a championship in football. Southwestern 4-A: Conference titles in men’s and women’s cross country, and women’s golf vault Ardrey Kell to the top of the conference. Myers Park is in second thanks to championships in women’s tennis and men’s soccer. A top finish in volleyball and second-place finishes in men’s and women’s cross country earn Providence third place. Tri Nine 4-A: Green Hope is in first after an impressive fall season with championships in men’s and women’s cross country, women’s tennis, and women’s golf. Apex is currently second, not only finishing first in the conference in volleyball, but winning a state title in the sport as well. Panther Creek is third with a tie for first in football.
