CHAPEL HILL—The North Carolina High School Athletic Association has announced the fall standings in the Wachovia Conference Cup competition for the 2005-2006 academic year.
The Wachovia Conference Cup, sponsored annually by Wachovia and sanctioned by the North Carolina High School Athletic Association, recognizes high school sports programs that achieve the best overall performance within their respective athletic conferences. Wachovia has sponsored the conference awards program since 1980.
The Wachovia Conference Cup—formerly known as the Wachovia Trophy—is a companion to the Wachovia Cup, a statewide award give to schools with the best overall interscholastic athletic performance in each of the four classifications.
In most conferences, points are awarded based on participation and standings in conference play. Each conference determines its own method of awarding points. Conferences are listed alphabetically by classification.
Class 1-A Conference Results
Albemarle 1-A: Manteo secured first place with a first-place finish in football and a second-place finish in soccer. Camden followed in second place, winning the conference title in volleyball. Conference standings: Manteo 39, Camden 32.5, Perquimans 27.5, Cape Hatteras 26.5, Gates 25, Columbia 17, and Creswell 13.
Atlantic Eight 1-A: A first-place finish in volleyball helped Williamston land in first place. Jamesville, Southside and Bear Grass all tied for second. Conference standings: Williamston 13, Bear Grass, 11, Jamesville 11, Southside 11, Northside 9, Plymouth 8, Roanoke 7, and Mattamuskeet 6.
Carolina 1-A: North Johnston used first-place finishes in football and soccer and a second-place finish in men’s cross-country to take first place. Rosewood is second with two first-place finishes in volleyball and tennis and a second-place finish in soccer. Conference standings: North Johnston 18.5, Rosewood 16, Spring Creek 15, Ayden-Grifton 11.5, North Duplin 8, and Princeton 8.
Coastal Plains 1-A: Topsail and East Carteret are deadlocked for first place. Topsail won conference championships in tennis, golf and men’s cross-country, and East Carteret had top finishes in volleyball and football. Conference standings: Topsail 290 and East Carteret 290 each, Dixon 272.5, Lejeune 225, Pamlico 122.5, and Jones Senior 100.
Northwest 1-A: Bishop McGuiness outdistanced Mount Airy after finishing first in soccer and second in men’s cross-country. Mount Airy brought home second with a first-place tie in football and a second-place finish in tennis. Conference standings: Bishop McGuiness 40, Mount Airy 36.5, West Wilkes 30.5, East Surry 30, North Stokes 29, East Wilkes 28, South Stokes 27.5, Elkin 27, and Alleghany 20.5.
Smoky Mountain 1-A: Murphy leads in points with a first-place finish in football and second-place finish volleyball. Hayesville had first-place finishes in men’s and women’s cross-country and a tie for third place in volleyball, putting it in second. Conference standings: Murphy 65, Hayesville 62.5, Swain 50, Robbinsville 43, Nantahala 31.5, Highlands 25, Andrews 24, Blue Ridge 21, Hiwassee Dam 19.5, Rosman 17.5, and Cherokee 17.
Super Six 1-A: Wallace-Rose Hill, James Kenan and Union are in a deadlock for first place. Wallace-Rose Hill had a first-place finish in football, James Kenan won the conference championship in soccer and Union led the conference in volleyball. Conference finishes: Wallace-Rose Hill, James Kenan, and Union 29 each, Hobbton 21.5, Lakewood 16, and Midway 12.5.
Tar Roanoke 1-A: Louisburg bypassed Southeast Halifax with first-place finishes in volleyball and men’s and women’s cross country. Southeast Halifax landed in second with a top finish in tennis and second place in men’s cross-country. Conference standings: Louisburg 240, Southeast Halifax 205, Northampton East 160, North Edgecombe 130, Northampton West 80, and Weldon 70.
Yadkin Valley 1-A: Jordan-Matthews stands on top with conference championships in soccer and tennis. Chatham Central used first-place finishes in men’s and women’s cross-country, and North Moore placed second in men’s cross-country and volleyball to tie for the runner-up sport. Conference standings: Jordan-Matthews 61, Chatham Central 58, North Moore 58, West Montgomery 54, South Davidson 49.5, Thomasville 48.5, and East Montgomery 43.
Class 1-A/2-A Conference Results:
Mid-State 1-A/2-A: Five first-place finishes in volleyball, tennis, soccer and men’s and women’s cross-country secured the league’s top spot for Cardinal Gibbons. Northwood followed with a first-place tie in football. Conference standings: Cardinal Gibbons 43, Northwood 32, Cedar Ridge 31, Durham School of the Arts 30, Orange 28, Graham 19.5, Raleigh Charter 15.5, and Cummings 13.
Rocky River 1-A/2-A: West Stanly stands in first place with conference championships in women’s cross-country and tennis. Second-place finishes in women’s cross-country and tennis put North Stanly in second. Conference standings: West Stanly 41.5, North Stanly 30, Albemarle 29.5, Mount Pleasant 28, South Stanly 27, Monroe 24, Forest Hills 21, and Gray Stone Day 13.
Southeastern 1-A/2-A: East Bladen had an excellent fall and holds the league lead after winning the championship in football and finishing second in tennis and volleyball. St. Pauls, with conference crowns in both volleyball and men’s cross-country, is in second. Conference standings: East Bladen 20, St. Pauls 17.5, West Bladen 16, Red Springs 14, Fairmont 12, West Columbus 8.5, and South Robeson 3.
Southern Piedmont 1-A/2-A: East Lincoln took the league’s top spot by taking first in men’s cross-country and second in varsity and JV football, varsity and JV volleyball and tennis. North Lincoln, conference champions in football, and Lincolnton, conference champions in tennis, tied for second. Conference standings: East Lincoln 99, North Lincoln and Lincolnton 97 each, West Lincoln 92, South Iredell 80, Cherryville 67, Highland Tech 57 and Bessemer City 26.
Waccamaw 1-A/2-A: Finishing second in volleyball and men’s cross-country barely put Heide Trask past North Brunswick and South Brunswick, who tied for second. North Brunswick finished first in men’s cross-country and second in football while South Brunswick finished second in soccer and third in tennis. Conference standings: Heide Trask 25, North Brunswick and South Brunswick 24.5 each, Whiteville 21.5, South Columbus 19, East Columbus 12.
Western Highlands 1-A/2-A: Charles D. Owen snags the top spot with first- place finishes in men’s and women’s cross-country, golf, and a tie for first in football. A first-place finish in soccer puts Polk County in second. Conference standings: Owen 76.5, Polk County 73.5, Hendersonville 68.5, Mountain Heritage 63.5, Avery 49.5, Madison 38.5 and Mitchell 37.
Class 2-A Conference Results:
Central Carolina 2-A: Ledford used its first-place finish in men’s cross country and tie for first in volleyball to put it on top. Salisbury is right behind after finishing first in women’s cross-country, tennis and soccer. Conference standings: Ledford 50.5, Salisbury 49.5, North Rowan 46, East Davidson 42, Central Davidson 40, West Davidson 38.5 and Lexington 23.5.
East Central 2-A: Swansboro, which took first in volleyball and second in tennis, locks into first place with East Duplin is second with a first-place finish in tennis and a tie for second in football. Conference standings: Swansboro 28.5, East Duplin 28, Northside Onslow 26, Croatan 21, Clinton 20, Southwest Onslow 19, Richlands 17.5 and South Lenoir 17.
Eastern Plains 2-A: Greene Central, paced by top finishes in football and tennis, leads the conference in points. Farmville Central took first in volleyball, landing it in second place overall. Conference standings: Greene Central 25.5, Farmville Central 24, Tarboro 17.5, North Pitt 17, North Lenoir 16, and Goldsboro 8.
Mountain Valley 2-A: Surry Central, conference champions in football and men’s cross-country, stands in first place. Wilkes Central follows in second with first-place finishes in tennis, soccer and women’s cross-country. Conference standings: Surry Central 75, Wilkes Central 72, Forbush 69.5, Ashe County 68, North Surry 62, Starmount 60 and North Wilkes 49.5.
North State 2-A: Finishing first in women’s cross-country and soccer was enough to put West Stokes past Southern Guilford, who took top honors in volleyball. Conference standings: West Stokes 59, Southern Guilford 56, McMichael 53.5, Reidsville 46.5, Eastern Guilford 40 and Atkins 18.
Northern Guilford 2-A: Southern Vance clinched first place in volleyball and tennis to sit atop the league standings. Roanoke Rapids is right behind with first-place finishes in soccer and men’s and women’s cross-country. Conference standings: Southern Vance 59.5, Roanoke Rapids 59, Warren County 48, Franklinton 47, Bunn 45 and Northwest Halifax 28.5.
Western Athletic 2-A: West Henderson, with league championships in women’s volleyball and men’s cross country, holds a narrow lead in the standings over Brevard. Brevard won women’s tennis and shared the football title. Conference standings: West Henderson 59.5, Brevard 57.5, North Henderson 52, East Henderson 50.5, Pisgah 41.5, Smoky Mountain 40.
Class 2-A/3-A Conference Results:
Catawba Valley 2-A/3-A: Hickory, conference champions in men’s cross-country, tennis and sharing the championship in football and soccer, leads over St. Stephens, who finished first in women’s cross-country. Conference standings: Hickory 78.5, St. Stephens 65, Fred T. Foard 64.5, Newton-Conover 63.5, Bandys 60, Hibriten 59.5, Bunker Hill 53.5, West Caldwell 35.5 and Maiden 20.
Northeastern Coastal 2-A/3-A: First Flight, the conference champion in soccer and women’s cross-country leads over Northeastern. Northeastern placed first in football and tied for first in volleyball. Conference standings: First Flight 63.5, Northeastern 57.5, Currituck 57, Pasquotank County 56, Hertford County 49, Edenton Holmes 41 and Bertie 22.
Southwestern 2-A/3-A: R-S Central lands in first place with three conference championships, including soccer, men’s and women cross-country. Shelby secures a spot in second with a first-place finish in tennis and a second-place spot in football. Conference standings: R-S Central 30, Shelby 29, East Rutherford 25, Kings Mountain 20, Burns 15, and Chase 5.

Eastern Carolina 3-A: C.B. Aycock took first place in tennis, soccer and golf to land in the top spot in the conference. Hunt is in second after taking the conference championship in football. Mid-Piedmont 3-A: Ragsdale leads the conference after taking league titles in soccer and tennis. Asheboro matches Southeast Guildford with points, with Asheboro claiming titles in men’s cross-country and Southeast Guilford taking crowns in women’s cross-country. Conference standings: Ragsdale 71, Asheboro 65, Southeast Guilford 65, Eastern Randolph 58, Southwestern Randolph 58, Trinity 58 and Randleman 45.
Mountain Athletic 3-A: T.C. Roberson had top finishes in golf and men’s and women’s country to secure first place. Asheville is in second with top finishes in football, tennis and soccer. Conference standings: T.C. Roberson 83, Asheville 64, Franklin 58, Enka 53, North Buncombe 51, Tuscola 49 and Clyde Erwin 22.
North Piedmont 3-A: Mooresville is on top with first-place finishes in volleyball, soccer and men’s cross-country. Lake Norman lands in second with a first-place finish in golf and second place in soccer. Conference standings: Mooresville 320, Lake Norman 255, Northwest 235, Statesville 232.5, North Iredell 222.5, West Iredell 220 and West Rowan 185.
Piedmont Triad 3-A: Southwest Guilford towers over the competition with first-place finishes in volleyball, tennis, soccer and men’s cross country. A first-place finish in women’s cross country put Reagan into second. Conference results: Southwest Guilford 31, Reagan 23, Glenn 22, High Point Andrews 22, Parkland 15 and Carver 9.
New Six 3-A: Rocky Mount leads the conference with titles in football, women’s cross country and volleyball, followed by Fike, who took first in soccer and tennis. Conference standings: Rocky Mount 60, Fike 58, Southern Nash 51.5, Nash Central 48.5, Northern Nash 46.5 and Southwest Edgecombe 33.5.
South Piedmont 3-A: Standing in first place with a conference title in football and second-place finishes in tennis and men’s and women’s cross-country is A.L. Brown. Porter Ridge is in second after taking a conference title in tennis. Conference standings: A.L. Brown 272.5, Porter Ridge 260, Parkwood 255, Piedmont 250, Sun Valley 245, Concord 202.5 and Anson 150.
Triad 3-A: Northeast Guilford holds the league lead after winning the conference volleyball crown, gaining a co-championship in soccer and a tri-championship in football. Western Alamance took top honors in women’s cross country and also had a share of football to move into second place. Conference standings: Northeast Guilford 34.5, Western Alamance 31, Morehead 28, Western Guilford 27, Rockingham 24, Dudley 10, and Bartlett Yancey 7.5.
Class 3-A/4-A Conference Results:
Big South 3-A/4-A: Ashbrook takes first place with top finishes in football, golf, tennis and women’s cross-country. Forestview’s championships in soccer and men’s cross-country helped it hold on to second. Conference standings: Ashbrook 79.5, Forestview 69.5, South Point 68, Crest 66, East Gaston 66, Hunter Huss 57 and North Gaston 36.5.
Coastal Conference 3-A/4-A: J.H. Rose bypassed New Bern by winning the conference championship in football and sharing top honors in tennis. New Bern followed in second with conference championships in soccer and golf. Conference standings: J.H. Rose 84.5, New Bern 76, West Carteret 68, South Central 66, Havelock 65, D.H. Conley 55, Washington 45.5 and West Craven 28.
Mid-East 3-A/4-A: John T. Hoggard captured three top finishes in football, volleyball and tennis to put it in the lead. New Hanover clinched second place with top finishes in soccer, men’s and women’s cross-country. Conference standings: John T. Hoggard 41, New Hanover 38.5, Laney 29.5, White Oak 28, Jacksonville 24, Ashley 21.5 and West Brunswick 13.5.
Queen City 3-A/4-A: Charlotte Catholic secured first place in volleyball, tennis, men’s and women’s cross country, soccer and football to put it on top by a comfortable margin. Harding finished second in tennis and women’s cross-country to hold second place. Conference standings: Charlotte Catholic 42, Harding 27.5, Olympic 25, West Mecklenburg 20.5, Berry Academy 19.5, Waddell 17 and Garinger 16.5.
Class 4-A Conference Results:
CAP 7 4-A: First-place finishes in tennis and men’s and women’s cross-country lead Broughton into first place. A conference championship in golf and a second-place finish in tennis put Leesville Road in second. Conference standings: Broughton 42.5, Leesville Road 33, Wakefield 32, Sanderson 24.5, Enloe 21, Millbrook 21, and Wake Forest-Rolesville 19.
Central Piedmont 4-A: Mount Tabor cruises past the competition with first-place finishes in men’s and women’s cross-country and sharing the top spot in soccer and football. West Forsyth finished second with a first-place finish in golf and a tie for first in soccer and football. Conference standings: Mt. Tabor 64, West Forsyth 60, R.J. Reynolds 54.5, Davie 48, North Davidson 43.5, South Rowan 38.5 and East Rowan 34.5.
Greater Neuse River 4-A: Southeast Raleigh had a first-place finish in volleyball and tennis to take the lead. Clayton followed in second with first place in golf. Conference standings: Southeast Raleigh 75.5, Clayton 72.5, Smithfield-Selma 71.5, West Johnston 62.5, Garner 50, Knightdale 49.5 and East Wake 47.5.
ME-CA 6: North Mecklenburg clinched conference titles in soccer and men’s and women’s cross country giving them first place while Central Cabarrus followed in second with conference title in tennis. Conference standings: North Mecklenburg 61.5, Central Cabarrus 57.5, J.M. Robinson 51, Hopewell 50.5, Vance 45 and West Charlotte 40.5.
Metro 4-A: Northwest Guilford matches Page for points with Northwest taking first-place in volleyball and men’s and women’s cross-country. Page had conference championships in tennis, golf and soccer. Conference standings: Northwest Guilford 40, Page 40, Grimsley 36, East Forsyth 29, High Point Central 19.5, North Forsyth 16 and Ben L. Smith 11.5.
Northwestern 4-A: A first-place finish in golf and second-place finishes in men’s and women’s cross-country enabled Freedom to slip into first. A.C. Reynolds followed closely in second with conference championships in football and soccer. Conference standings: Freedom 38.5, A.C. Reynolds 38, Watauga 35, Alexander 22.5, South Caldwell 22.5, East Burke 19.5 and McDowell 18.5.
PAC 6 4-A: Chapel Hill claimed first place in women’s cross-country and field hockey to inch by Jordan, who won the conference title in soccer. Conference standings: Chapel Hill 44, Jordan 41.5, East Chapel Hill 41, Riverside 37.5, Northern Durham 28, Person 21, Southern Durham 13.5 and Hillside 12.5.
Southwestern 4-A: Providence inched by Myers Park with first-place finishes in women’s cross-country, tennis and volleyball. Myers Park used first-place finishes in men’s cross-country and soccer to take the runner-up spot. Conference standings: Providence 61, Myers Park 60, South Mecklenburg 50, Weddington 46, Butler 45, East Mecklenburg 43 and Independence 38.
Tri-7 4-A: Top finishes in soccer and golf lead Apex to first place followed by Green Hope, who won the conference championship in men’s and women’s cross-country. Conference standings: Apex 38.5, Green Hope 35.5, Athens Drive 34.5, Cary 26, Middle Creek 22.5, Fuquay-Varina 21.5 and Lee County 16.5.
Two Rivers 4-A: First-place finishes in men’s and women’s cross-country were just enough to put South View past Terry Sanford. Sanford tied for first in second and won the conference title in tennis. Conference standings: South View 35.5, Terry Sanford 35, E.E. Smith 23.5, Pine Forest 23, Lumberton 20.5, Purnell Swett 14 and Cape Fear 13.5.
