2007-08 WACHOVIA CONFERENCE CUP WINNERS ANNOUNCED
CHAPEL HILL—The North Carolina High School Athletic Association has announced the final conference standings in the Wachovia Conference Cup competition for the 2007-2008 academic year.
The Wachovia Conference Cup, sponsored annually by Wachovia Bank, N.A., and sanctioned by the North Carolina High School Athletic Association, recognizes high school sports programs that achieve the best overall performance within their respective athletic conferences. Wachovia has sponsored the conference awards program since 1980.
The Wachovia Conference Cup, formerly known as the Wachovia Trophy, is a companion to the Wachovia Cup, a statewide award give to schools with the best overall interscholastic athletic performance in each of the four classifications.
In most conferences, points are awarded based on participation and standings in conference play. Each conference determines its own method of awarding points. Conferences are listed alphabetically by classification.
Class 1-A Conference Results
Albemarle 1-A: For the third year in a row, Manteo took the Conference Cup with a title in softball and third-place finish in baseball. Camden followed in second place and recorded a conference crown in baseball. Final conference standings: Manteo 60, Camden 51, Perquimans 42 and Plymouth 29.
Atlantic 1-A: Williamston finished first overall with a conference championship in baseball and second-place finishes in softball and women’s track. Second place went to Southside who took conference crowns in softball and men’s track. Final conference standings: Williamston 67, Southside 59, Northside 58 and Roanoke 50.
Carolina 1-A: After leading all season North Johnston sealed the deal with top finishes in baseball, softball, tennis and golf. Top finishes in men’s and women’s track put Ayden-Grifton in second place overall. Final conference standings: North Johnston 67, Ayden-Grifton 49.5, Princeton 45, Rosewood 43, Spring Creek 35.5 and North Duplin.
Coastal Plains 1-A: Topsail had an amazing season and took the Conference Cup again this year with first-place finishes in women’s track, soccer, golf and tennis. Dixon finished the year in second place with a league title in baseball. Final conference standings: Topsail 1027.5, Dixon 737.5, East Carteret 622.5, Lejeune 547.7, Pamlico 460 and Jones 435.
Northwest 1-A: Bishop McGuinness took the Conference Cup, recording second-place finishes in soccer and women’s track this spring. Mount Airy followed in second, winning a championship in tennis. Final conference standings: Bishop McGuinness 125, Mount Airy 103.5, South Stokes 97, Easy Surry 93, West Wilkes 91, East Wilkes 81, Elkin 74, Alleghany 61.5 and North Stokes 61.
Smoky Mountain 1-A: After finishing in a close second to Hayesville last year, Murphy took the league championship and finished the season with a tie for second in baseball. Hayesville was second place and recorded a second-place finish in golf and men’s track. Final conference standings: Murphy 163, Hayesville 158, Swain 150.5, Robbinsville 148.5, Cherokee 118.5, Rosman 111, Andrews 104.5, Hiwassee Dam 94, Blue Ridge 58.5, Highlands 38.5 and Nantahala 31.
Super Six 1-A: Surging from third place, Midway finished on top with second-place finishes in baseball, golf and softball. Union and James Kenan tied for second place in the conference. Union recorded championships in softball and men’s track and James Kenan earned a championship in women’s track and a tie for first place in soccer. Final conference standings: Midway 480, Union 465, James Kenan 465, Wallace-Rose Hill 460, Hobbton 442.5 and Lakewood 377.5.
Tar Roanoke 1-A: Louisburg had an outstanding season with conference championships in baseball, golf, women’s track and soccer to clinch the Conference Cup. Top finishes in baseball and softball put Gates County in second place overall. Final conference standings: Louisburg 990, Gates County 670, North Edgecombe 470, Northampton-East 470, Southeast Halifax 400, Weldon 300 and Northampton-West 230.
Tideland 1-A: League titles in softball and baseball helped Jamesville clinch the conference crown. Cape Hatteras finished the year in second place. Final conference standings: Jamesville 38, Cape Hatteras 33, Bear Grass 27.5, Columbia 23.5, Mattamuskeet 20.5, Creswell 19.5 and Ocracoke 2.
Yadkin Valley 1-A: Jordan-Matthews climbed from third to first place overall this spring with a league title in golf and a tie for first in men’s tennis. East Montgomery followed in second place, recording a championship in soccer and a tie for first in tennis. Final conference standings: Jordan-Matthews 157.5, East Montgomery 153.5, Chatham Central 149, West Montgomery 140.5, South Davidson 138.5, North Moore 121.5 and Thomasville 116.5.
Class 1-A/2-A Conference Results
Mid-State 1-A/2-A: Cardinal Gibbons sealed the deal with three conference championships in tennis, soccer and golf. A top finish in softball put Northwood in second place for the year. Final conference standings: Cardinal Gibbons 145, Northwood 110, Cedar Ridge 106, Orange 94.5, N.C. Science and Math 87.5, Durham School of the Arts 83, Graham 76, Carrboro 76, Raleigh Charter 55 and Cummings 51.
Rocky River 1-A/2-A: Mount Pleasant took first place overall in the conference with a tie for first in baseball and a second-place finish in golf. Albemarle finished in second place with a tie for first place in tennis. Final conference standings: Mount Pleasant 117.5, Albemarle 98, West Stanly 95, Forest Hills 89, North Stanly 88, South Stanly 83, Gray Stone Day 73, Monroe 63 and Central Academy 41.5.
Southeastern 1-A/2-A: Championships in baseball and softball helped West Bladen take the top spot in the conference. Top finishes in men’s and women’s track helped St. Paul’s pass Fairmont and East Bladen for second place. Final conference standings: West Bladen 57, St. Paul’s 46, East Bladen 41, Fairmont 41, West Columbus 36, South Robeson 35 and Red Springs 29.
Southern Piedmont 1-A/2-A: East Lincoln took the conference title with first-place finishes in men’s and women’s track as well as women’s soccer. Lincolnton remained in second place overall. Final conference standings: East Lincoln 222, Lincolnton 201, North Lincoln 195, South Iredell 188, West Lincoln 175, Cherryville 174, Highland Tech 160 and Bessemer City 110.
Waccamaw 1-A/2-A: South Brunswick broke the tie for first place after the winter sports and pulled ahead of Pender to clinch the top spot in the conference. South took conference crowns in golf and soccer, while Pender finished the season with conference titles in women’s track and softball. Final conference standings: South Brunswick 138.5, Pender 125, North Brunswick 97.5, Whiteville 94.5, Heide Trask 71.5, South Columbus 70 and East Columbus 56.
Western Highlands 1-A/2-A: In a tight race, Polk County and Charles D. Owen ended the year in a dead heat for the Cup. Polk County finished the season with titles in soccer and golf while Owen finished the season with titles in baseball and men’s and women’s track. Hendersonville followed just a point and a half off the pace in third place with a championship in tennis. Final conference standings: Polk County 174.5, Charles D. Owen 174.5, Hendersonville 172, Mountain Heritage 140.5, Avery 123, Madison 120.5 and Mitchell 110.
Class 2-A Conference Results
Central Carolina 2-A: With a tie for first place in baseball and first-place finishes in women’s soccer, men’s and women’s track, Salisbury had an outstanding year that led them to the Conference Cup. Second place went to Ledford who took first place in golf and tied for first in baseball. Final conference standings: Salisbury 151, Ledford 144.5, Central Davidson 139.5, West Davidson 133.5, East Davidson 118, North Rowan 95.5 and Lexington 92.
East Central 2-A: East Duplin passed Swansboro for the conference title and recorded a top finish in tennis. Swansboro ended the season with top finishes in men’s and women’s track and soccer. Final conference standings: East Duplin 169, Swansboro 167, Croatan 164.5, Richlands 146, Clinton 142, South Lenoir 134.5, Southwest 128 and Northside 123.
Eastern Plains 2-A: Championships in women’s track and tennis and a tie for first place in softball helped Greene Central edge past North Pitt for the league title. North Pitt recorded a championship in men’s track. Final conference standings: Greene Central 57.5, North Pitt 57,North Lenoir 54, Farmville Central 53.5, Tarboro 48.5 and Goldsboro 30.5.
Mountain Valley 2-A: With league titles in tennis and track, Starmount remained on top to clinch the conference crown. Wilkes Central finished the year in second place, taking top honors in women’s track. Final conference standings: Starmount 222, Wilkes Central 216.5, Forbush 200, Surry Central 196, Ashe County 186, North Surry 185.5 and North Wilkes 167.
North State 2-A: West Stokes finished first overall and ended the year with a flourish, taking first place in tennis and softball and second place in baseball, women’s track, soccer and golf. Final conference standings: West Stokes 176, McMichael 160.5, Eastern Guilford 154.5, Reidsville 142.5, Southern Guilford 120.5 and Atkins 80.
Northern Carolina 2-A: Southern Vance was able to keep its lead to take the Conference Cup and finished the year with conference crowns in men’s and women’s track and a tie for first place in softball. Second place went to Roanoke Rapids who recorded first-place finishes in soccer and baseball. Final conference standings: Southern Vance 189.5, Roanoke Rapids 186.5, Bunn 179, Franklinton 161, Warren County 111, Granville Central 105 and Northwest Halifax 72.
Western Athletic 2-A: West Henderson took the top spot in the conference and swept the season with top finishes in men’s and women’s track, golf, baseball and soccer. North Henderson followed in second place. Conference standings: West Henderson 830, North Henderson 680, Pisgah 660, Brevard 635, East Henderson 620 and Smoky Mountain 565.
Class 2-A/3-A Conference Results
Catawba Valley 2-A/3-A: The Conference Cup went to Hickory again this year as the Red Tornadoes captured championships in soccer and golf in the spring. Following in second place, St. Stephens earned a tie for first in baseball and second-place finishes in soccer and softball. Final conference standings: Hickory 239, St. Stephens 224.5, Fred T. Foard 213, Hibriten 207.5, Newton-Conover 190.5, Bandys 175.5, Bunker Hill 150, Maiden 145.5 and West Caldwell 140.5.
Northeastern Coastal 2-A/3-A: First Flight had an outstanding year and secured the Conference Cup with championships in baseball, soccer, women’s track, golf and tennis. Currituck County remained in second place with second-place finishes in golf and baseball. Final conference standings: First Flight 199, Currituck County 174.5, Northeastern 159, Edenton Holmes 153.5, Pasquotank 139.5, Hertford County 119 and Bertie County 96.5.
Southwestern 2-A/3-A: Shelby sealed the deal for first place overall with a top finish in men’s track. R-S Central passed Kings Mountain for second place in the conference with championships in baseball and softball. Final conference standings: Shelby 85, R-S Central 78.5, Kings Mountain 76, East Rutherford 55, Burns 43.5 and Chase 32.
Class 3-A Conference Results
Cape Fear Valley 3-A: Union Pines won the league points race again this year and ended with a conference crown in tennis and a tie for first place in women’s track. Second place overall went to Harnett Central who took conference titles in softball and soccer. Final conference standings: Union Pines 231, Harnett Central 224, South Johnston 207, Triton 204.5, Southern Lee 200.5, Western Harnett 175, Overhills 168.5 and Gray’s Creek 160.5.
Eastern Carolina 3-A: A championship in baseball and second-place finishes in golf, soccer, tennis and men’s track helped Eastern Wayne clinch the conference title. James B. Hunt took second place and finished the season with championships in golf and soccer. Final conference standings: Eastern Wayne 185, James B. Hunt 180.5, C.B. Aycock 164, Southern Wayne 145, Beddingfield 144 and Kinston 114.5.
Mid Piedmont 3-A: For the third year in a row, Ragsdale finished on top, taking league titles in soccer, men’s and women’s track. Southeast Guilford remained in second place and took first place in baseball, golf and tennis. Final conference standings: Ragsdale 226.5, Southeast Guilford 204, Asheboro 192.5, Eastern Randolph 189, Trinity 171.5, Southwestern Randolph 166 and Randleman 144.5.
Mid-State 3-A: First-place finishes in golf, tennis and soccer helped Williams hold on to the conference lead and take the title. Eastern Alamance remained in second place while Southern Alamance and J.F. Webb tied for third place overall. Final conference standings: Williams 87.5, Eastern Alamance 82.5, Southern Alamance 75.5, J.F. Webb 75.5, Northern Vance 56 and South Granville 55.
Mountain Athletic 3-A: T.C. Roberson once again took the Conference Cup and recorded spring titles in softball, women’s track, women’s soccer and men ‘s tennis. Second place went to Asheville, which won in men’s track. Final conference standings: T.C. Roberson 236, Asheville 177, North Buncombe 159, Franklin 156, Enka 127, Tuscola 127 and Clyde Erwin 64.
NEW Six 3-A: Rocky Mount took the league Cup with championships in men’s and women’s track and a tie for first in baseball. Fike followed in second place with championships in golf and soccer with a tie for first in baseball. Final conference standings: Rocky Mount 174, Fike 166.5, Nash Central 162.5, Northern Nash 154, Southern Nash 142.5 and SouthWest Edgecombe 118.5.
North Piedmont 3-A: After battling all year, Mooresville slipped past Lake Norman for the conference crown. Mooresville took home top finishes in men’s track, women’s soccer and men’s tennis while Lake Norman earned top honors in women’s soccer and men’s golf. Final conference standings: Mooresville 722.5, Lake Norman 715, Northwest Cabarrus 705, East Rowan 592.5, West Rowan 535, Statesville 512.5, South Rowan 432.5, North Iredell 385, West Iredell 347.5 and Carson 255.
Piedmont Triad 3-A: After finishing a close second last year, Reagan took the Conference Cup this year with a championship in golf and a tie for first in women’s soccer. Southwest Guilford took second place and recorded a first-place finish in tennis and shared first in soccer with Reagan. Final conference standings: Reagan 84, Southwest Guilford 79, Glenn 72, Parkland 62.5, High Point Andrews 34.5 and Carver 24.
South Piedmont 3-A: Marvin Ridge rallied from second place to win it all with spring championships in women’s track, soccer and baseball. Concord trailed in second place. Final conference standings: Marvin Ridge 695, Concord 585, Porter Ridge 569.5, Sun Valley 565, Hickory Ridge 550, A.L. Brown 517.5, Piedmont 487.5, Parkwood 465 and Anson 375.
Triad 3-A: After leading all year, Western Guilford wrapped the title up with championships in women’s track and soccer and first-place ties in baseball and men’s tennis. Second place went to Morehead, which shared first place in golf. Final conference standings: Western Guilford 112.5, Morehead 97, Northeast Guilford 87.5, Rockingham County 86.5, Western Alamance 85, Northern Guilford 61, Dudley 56.5 and Bartlett Yancey 49.
Class 3-A/4-A Conference Results
Big South 3-A/4-A: Ashbrook and Forestview finished in a deadlock for first place. Ashbrook had top finishes in men’s and women’s track while Forestview won in golf, tennis and soccer. East Gaston and South Point tied for second place overall. Final conference standings: Ashbrook 192 and Forestview 192 each, East Gaston 179, South Point 179, Crest 159, Hunter Huss 137 and North Gaston 135.
Coastal 3-A/4-A: Conference powerhouses J.H. Rose and New Bern tied for first place overall in the conference. J.H. Rose had championships in baseball, golf and tennis while New Bern earned league crowns in women’s soccer and men’s tack. South Central trailed in third place with a top finish in softball. Final conference standings: J.H. Rose 213 and New Bern 213 each, South Central 182, D.H. Conley 177.5, Havelock 176.5, West Carteret 170.5, Washington 159.5 and West Craven 99.
Mideastern 3-A/4-A: With a tie for first place in baseball and championships in golf, tennis and men’s track, Hoggard was able to clinch the Conference Cup again. New Hanover followed in second place with second-place finishes in tennis and golf. Final conference standings: Hoggard 115, New Hanover 87, Laney 77.5, Jacksonville 70, White Oak 67.5, Ashley 66.5 and West Brunswick 42.5
Queen City 3-A/4-A: Charlotte Catholic swept the conference this season with league titles in tennis, golf and softball and a tie for first place in softball. Finishing in second place, West Mecklenburg shared the top spot in softball and took second place in baseball. Final conference standings: Charlotte Catholic 117, West Mecklenburg 91, Olympic 85, Harding 85, Berry Academy 36, E.E. Waddell 35.5 and Garinger 21.5.
Class 4-A Conference Results
CAP Seven 4-A: Leesville Road barely topped Broughton for the Conference Cup. Wakefield finished third overall. Final conference standings: Leesville Road 98.5, Broughton 97.5, Wakefield 86, Enloe 83.5, Millbrook 75, Sanderson 65.5 and Wake Forest-Rolesville 54.
Central Piedmont 4-A: Mount Tabor brought home the Conference Cup once again and had an outstanding spring with titles in men’s and women’s track, soccer and tennis. West Forsyth trailed in second place, recording a tie for first in softball. Final conference standings: Mount Tabor 175.5, West Forsyth 152.5, R.J. Reynolds 146, Davie County 139.5, North Davidson 135 and North Forsyth 86.
Greater Neuse River 4-A: Championships in golf, soccer and tennis led Clayton to the Conference Cup once again. Southeast Raleigh finished the year in second and recorded top finishes in men’s and women’s track. Final conference standings: Clayton 256.5, Southeast Raleigh 232, West Johnston 230, Garner 222, Knightdale 206.5, Smithfield-Selma 202.5, Holly Springs 202 and East Wake 182.5.
ME-CA Six 4-A: North Mecklenburg defended the Conference Cup with a league title in soccer and a tie for first in baseball. Hopewell finished second overall with a golf championship and a tie for first in baseball. Final conference standings: North Mecklenburg 193, Hopewell 188.5, Jay Robinson 173, Mallard Creek 161, Central Cabarrus 145, Vance 135.5 and West Charlotte 122.
Metro 4-A: After battling back and forth this year, Northwest Guilford took the Conference Cup over Grimsley, earning first-place finishes in softball and track. Grimsley followed closely in second place with a championship in golf. Final conference standings: Northwest Guilford 87.5, Grimsley 86, Page 77, East Forsyth 74.5, High Point Central 47.5, Ben L. Smith 26.5.
Mid-Southeastern 4-A: Jack Britt held onto first place to take the Conference Cup. Britt won the men’s track championship. Pinecrest took second place and recorded top finishes in tennis and golf. Final conference standings: Jack Britt 109.5, Pinecrest 107.5, Scotland County 88, Richmond Senior 76, Hoke County 70, Seventy-First 57, Westover 47 and Douglas Byrd 44.
Northwestern 4-A: A championship in men’s tennis helped Watauga defend its conference title. A.C. Reynolds trailed in second with first-place finishes in women’s soccer and track. Final conference standings: Watauga 99.5, A.C. Reynolds 86.5, South Caldwell 74.5, East Burke 73.5, Freedom 73.5, Alexander Central 63.5 and McDowell 60.
PAC Six 4-A: Chapel Hill won the Conference Cup again this year and finished the spring with a league title in lacrosse. Championships in soccer and tennis helped East Chapel Hill remain in second place. Final conference standings: Chapel Hill 125, East Chapel Hill 118, Jordan 106.5, Riverside 101.5, Northern Durham 93.5, Person 53, Hillside 52 and Southern Durham 39.5.
Southwestern 4-A: Myers Park took the top spot in the conference and recorded a championship in women’s track. Providence remained in second with a title in men’s golf. Final conference standings: Myers Park 190.5, Providence 183, Ardrey Kell 179, Weddington 173.5, Butler 159, South Mecklenburg 147.5, East Mecklenburg 138 and Independence 107.5.
Tri-Eight 4-A: Apex remained in first place and took the league Cup with conference crowns in women’s track, baseball and a tie for the title in men’s tennis. Following in second place, Green Hope captured a championship in golf and a tie for first in women’s soccer. Final conference standings: Apex 153.5, Green Hope 138.5, Athens Drive 114.5, Middle Creek 103.5, Cary 94.5, Fuquay-Varina 78, Panther Creek 69.5 and Lee County 63.
Two Rivers 4-A: Terry Sanford barely passed South View for the Conference Cup by winning titles in women’s tennis and men’s golf. South View had top finishes in softball, men’s and women’s track. Final conference standings: Terry Sanford 83.5, South View 83, Lumberton 72, Cape Fear 70, Pine Forest 65, E.E. Smith 43 and Purnell Swett 31.5.
