Weddington Holds Off C.b. Aycock In 3-A Baseball Game One

WEDDINGTON HOLDS OFF AYCOCK RALLY 5-3 IN GAME ONE OF 3-A BASEBALL CHAMPIONSHIP

ZEBULON — Weddington built up a lead and then held off a furious last-inning rally by Pikeville Charles B. Aycock to score a 5-3 victory on Friday night in the first game of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 3-A baseball championship series at Five County Stadium.

Alex Bostic shut out the Golden Falcons into the seventh in impressive fashion, but Aycock rallied in its last at-bat. Bostic moved his record to 11-0 and yielded only two hits, but he walked eight and struck out eight in his six-plus innings of work.

Down 5-0, the Golden Falcons scored three runs in the seventh on a two-run double by Blake Sutton and a sacrifice fly by Collin Dubose, but David Pope of the Warriors came on to get the save.

Weddington scored two in the bottom of the third to open the scoring and then added three in the fourth, with Sean Collins ripping a triple that scored one run.

Chris Simpson was a perfect three for three on the day for Weddington in the Warriors’ nine hit attack, the only player in the game with more than one hit. Seven of the nine hitters in the Weddington lineup hit safely.

Dubose, who pitched the first four innings for Aycock, was charged with the loss, giving up six hits and five runs, but only two runs were unearned.

Weddington, in its first NCHSAA baseball championship series, is now 27-6 overall while Aycock fell to 21-10.

Game two of the best-of-three is set for Saturday morning at eleven o’clock.
