Weddington’s Watts Qualifies For NCHSAA Record Book

Weddington High School’s Stephanie Watts has completed an outstanding high school basketball career and has earned several spots in the North Carolina High School Record Book.

Watts, who led Weddington the whole way to the Western Regional 3-A finals before losing to Hickory, was recently named the Gatorade Player of the Year in North Carolina.

The Weddington standout finished with 2,566 career points, which is good for 11th all-time in the scoring leader list.

Her 156 three-pointers during the 2014-15 season is a new state record, eclipsing the old mark of 126 set by Mary Hall McArver of Gastonia Forestview over a decade ago, during the 2002-03 season.  Watts ended her career with 374 three-point field goals for her career, which is second all-time to the standard of 414 set by former West Craven star Jamie Cherry, who now plays for the University of North Carolina.

Watts also hit 11 shots from beyond the arc in a January 2015 game against Cuthbertson, just one shy of the state record.

Our thanks to coach Ryun Cook for providing complete documentation and congratulations to Stephanie Watts.
