Each week two athletes in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association are selected for the Performance of the Week Award, Powered by OrthoCarolina. These athletes are nominated by coaches, media and school administrators for their outstanding performance.
The OrthoCarolina Performers of the Week for week 32 of NCHSAA competition are Ellie Garrison from Wheatmore and Gates Hinton from Fuquay-Varina.
Garrison, a senior women’s soccer player for the Warriors, has broken another NCHSAA record. Ellie broke the single season state record last year with 96 goals in one season. The most goals in a high school career was formerly held by Isabel Pearce with 226 total goals. After scoring 11 goals in two games this week, Ellie Garrison claimed her spot as the new NCHSAA women’s soccer goal scoring record holder with 230 goals scored.
Hinton, a senior Track and Field athlete for the Bengals, threw the discus an outstanding 206-9.5 during the Greater Neuse River Conference quad meet. This throw not only won him the competition, but is the farthest throw in the country for the 2024 season according to MileSplit. He also finished first in discus and second in the shot put at the Wake County Championship meet this week. Gates was the 2023 4A Discus State Champion, and is looking to continue his success as the season progresses.
