RALEIGH – Zach Andrews ripped a bases-loaded double in the first inning to get West Columbus off and running and the Vikings beat Chatham Central 9-2 on Saturday afternoon in the second game of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 1-A baseball championship series on the N.C. State University campus.
The West Columbus victory evened the best of three series at a game apiece. Chatham Central had won the completion of Friday night’s suspended game 9-8 earlier in the day.
The third and decisive game in the series is now scheduled for Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
Senior pitcher John David White got the pitching victory for the Vikings to improve his record to 10-0, striking out seven and walking six. Seth Kivett (10-3) was charged with the loss.
The Bears took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first but West responded with four in its half of the frame, keyed by the three-run double by Andrews. Andrews went two for four on the day while Devon Brown was two for two, scored three runs and stole a pair of bases. Daniel Britt also singled twice for the Vikings, 27-4 overall.
Kivett and Spencer Moody each had two hits for the Bears and Aubrey Johnson drove home both of Chatham Central’s runs. The Bears are now 26-7 overall.
